my poor kitty! 2 nights ago, we saw him limping around the house, couldnt figure out why. thought maybe he got in a fight when he slipped outside earlier that day, and maybe jumped down the wrong way. couldnt see anything wrong with his leg, paw or anything. so today when he was still limping i showed my friend, she works at a vet clinic on the military base. she said "let me take him in and have my capt. take a look at him" ok so off they go. i called her through out the day to check in, but they were swamped and hadnt had a chance to get him in yet. then about 3pm i get a paniced call for my friend, asking which vet i use and to call them and have the records transfered. why i asked, she said ill tell you later got to go. :shrug7: ok i trust this woman with my kids everyday, so i know she has good judgement. i called my vet, they faxed over the vac. records. i call my friend, she said yes we got them, hes in surgery right now....."what!?!?!?!?!?!?!" yep the poor thing had an absess on his shoulder, and had to be rushed into surgery, it was really bad. he now has a big area on his shoulder that is shaved, and has 2 incisions with a drainage tube. we have to flush the wound 4 times a day, and his needs his meds every 12 hours. the vet said hes had this for a while now, but because of his fur, and where it was, thatswhy we didnt see it. poor thing looks like a bloody mess. his drain is all bloody, and swollen, and hes having a hard time eating and drinking with the cone he has to wear.
any advies on how to make him more comfortable? ive moved him into our room with his litter box food and water. i made his a bed on the floor, but he wants out to roam the house already. i know i need to limit his activity for a few days, but he just wants to get out of that room.

im just glad she took him into her work! my vet wanted an arm and a leg just to see him today, they dont normally do appts on thursdays unless they are an emergency. it only cost me $33 for every thing today, and my vet wanted $50 just for him to be seen....

poor kitty  maybe he is restless due to pain? did the vet prescribe pain meds? my daughter is a vet tech and they sometimes put post-surgical animals on Hill's Science Diet Recovery formula at the clinic where she works, it has extra nutrients and she says most cats will eat it......but I would give him a day or so to get his appetite back. Good luck!

If he wants to get up and roam around, he is feeling better.. If the eating continues to be a problem, get some turkey legs or chicken and boil it for him and pick it off the bone, give him a little at a time.. make sure he is drinking water, even if u have to force the water, wet a paper towel and hold it to his mouth, dont hold it over his nose, or drowned him...One of my babies died because he had a wound that absessed, even though i tried do everything for him i finally had to let him go ( its been 3 years).. Sounds like he is going to be ok, just keep an eye on him and hand feed him if u need to...gl

I work at an animal hospital and a lot of cats don't even move with the medical collar on. :) If he'll let you put the collar back on, you can take it off BRIEFLY to eat, but put it back on if he tries to go for the incisions. If he absolutely won't leave it alone if you take the collar off, you can try hand feeding him.
I know it's hard but he has to stay quiet for a few days with limited activity. Can I ask what meds he was sent home with?

they only gave me one med for him, and then also some iodine? at least thats what it looks like. the RX he has is clavamox (amoxicillin trihydrate/clavulante potassium). hes feeling much better now that its been a few days. hes walking around more, and has learned how to eat and drink and even go potty with th cone on. the only issue we are having is sleeping. he has this need to sleep on me with his head under my chin, but with a 10inch cone around his head it makes it difficult, for me that is. he has no problem be all up in my face! lmao!!! he goes back for a check on monday, and the i think the tube comes out wed, or thursday.
