Has anyone in Florida tried the upside down hanging planters to grow veggies? I am wondering how it will do with the wind & all.

I haven't used them. The only ones I have seen are the strawberries and tomatoes. Tomatoes are to sensitive to lack of water to put in hanging pot, they would dry out to quick. Strawberries here have to be mulched at winter, so that would mean I would have to store them and cover them every winter. When I could just stick them in the ground. Are they others besides the strawberries and tomatoes?

how cool is that? pretty cool.
I wonder if it is okay to put flowers in the top though or if it would have any effect on the tomato plants

yep, they would.
I got some of the "big gulp" type plastic cups and made some planters out of them since the donut shop didn't have any and it is better to recycle what I have anyway.
they are the perfect size too!

Less harsh on the digestive system & supposedly as the name goes causes less burping. Really does work.

Try lemon cucumbers as they are burpless also and are small enough in size for single use. I like them and think they are sweeter and their size is perfect for me to make a sandwich with.

Wow! I have never heard of that. I want to try it! Big Gulp plastic cups? Sounds great! Thanks for the tip!!! I don't have a yard, only a planter box, but that has my flowers in it. I have lots of hanging space though, so this just might work!!!:BigHand:

I'm resurrecting and old post. Did anyone try flowers in the topsy turvy? I'm thinking rave petunias would make a huge show of beauty.

We tried lemon cukes the first time a couple years ago because of their unique shape and color. They grew like weeds and from two hills I ended up with something like 200 cukes. The enighbors loved me, lol.

I bought one called Plug 'N Gro-Bag but haven't used it yet. I'm planning to put in tomatoes and maybe strawberries.
How big should the tomatoes be before transplanting?

I haven't tried it yet. To tell you the truth, I forgot all about it with so much else going on right now. I am glad you bumped it, since I need to get started on it or I won't have anything growing!:BigHand:

Wow, I so want to try this! I love the idea of having a container garden, but my apartment complex will only allow two potted plants per resident on the patios. But my place has these bicycle hooks in back that a former tenant installed--they would be perfect for those hanging planters.
Does anyone know where to get cheap buckets to make these? Jane4girls, how did the big gulp cups work? Any pictures?

We just hung up the Topsy Turvy with a tomato in it last week...so far it's working well, the tomato has grown several inches since we put it in there, we'll see how it works as the summer goes along!

There are instructions on the Instructables website on how to make your own with a 2-liter bottle. Just do a search for inverted tomato planter. :)

I have never heard of them but they sound interesting. I will have to see if I can find some.

I did this this year and loved it!
I bought a topsy turvy and wanted more but couldn't find them again.
Rather than spend lots of money ordering online I thought I would try making them!
I had an old hanging planter and drilled a large hole in the bottom. I planted tomatoes first.
I liked it so much I bought more plastic hanging planters and drilled more holes!
I did 4 more tomatoes
1 cucumber
1 lemon cucumber
works great! I have 3 med cukes so far! lots of tomatoes too!
As luck would have it I happened to be in value village the next week and they had this interesting looking thing over in the corner. I went to see what it was and it was 50% off.
nobody knew what it was BUT I saw the pictures of tomatoes and peppers on the side and knew it was some fancy upside down garden thing!
I picked it up for $9.99.
It holds 4 plants upside down AND you can plant on the top too!
I did 2 peppers and 2 tomato
strawberries and basil on the top!
Here is a link to the picture to see what its like.

You could probably build something out of pvc pipes and a box or something!

wow, that looks neat. What is in the center? Is the black pipe looking thing hollow or does it store the water?

The black thing in the middle is just a hollow pipe holding up the planter.
They all come apart for easy storage!
The base has a hole to fill with water so it doesn't tip over.........I was lazy and didn't fill it the first time! Big mistake with dogs and kids! it fell over! (nobody did it tho!)
There is nothing to auto water this though.
