Thickbluebug, have you gone to FW Pelham to see if these meat deals are really good deals, or whether they have jacked prices up, only to mark them 50% off? Pelham is a long drive just to get there and find out this is just an advertising ploy. Thanks.

An hour drive is too much this week end.
Anyway, Mccook pmd me and told me not to bother trying it.
Nothing looked that great compared to the old prices.
I go where the deals are. So I ended up going somewhere else and got my ham and the mayfield banana popsicles today. I had a $5 coupon from the school book and the banana pops were $2.
I had a .65 that doubled and made them .70 for a 12 pack.
I only bought freebies (cat food, plug ins, oscar mayer, sun detergent .09 after coupon) and then the ham and the pops.

This other store I am trying (since my local fw closed) - they double up to 90.

The Pelham store has had 2 "grand openings". One this week and one June 3rd (I think) . I went to the first one and was NOT impressed. The store was filled with all these new signs up and down the aisles advertising "new" prices. It was very distracting and they were still just as expensive as before. I feel they could do away with all the signs and save the customer that money. Granted, I have not been this week. According to the B'ham News they closed the store for 3 days to get ready and lowered prices and re-arranged the store. I might drop by out of curiosity.

BTW, thickbluebug, can I ask what store you found that doubled qs up to .90?

piggly wiggly, and they all have a different double policy.

forestdale does up to .90

Cullman doesn't double. Strange that the stores vary that much.

I was not impressed with FW at all. I did buy a few things. I was confused at first b/c it said price on packages equaled 50% off. I did the math and that was not the case....I asked the guy stocking, who said they reduced the price per lb. to reflect the discount. HMMM did they really or is this a gimmick?? They may have but the prices were still to high for me. Also it was on things we do not eat here...chicken legs and thighs/spare ribs/cube steak. I did get a smithfield ham that was a decent deal and I bought some of the seafood (better price than buying in bulk at Sam's). HTH someone.

THanks, everyone. That's what I figured -- another advertising gimmick.

I just got through reading the article in today's Birmingham News (5B) about the new store "re-opening" in Pelham and it really hits to the core problem with Food World/Bruno's. The article talks about how the new Food World has this new promotion called Power Buys/Price Reductions that replace the old value card. The article mentions new "power buys" like Hunts Ketchup (36 oz bottle) for 1.99, Mott's applesauce 6 pack for 1.99 and Capri Sun for 2.50. Well, Publix had the 14 oz bottle of ketchup for .79 and the Capri Suns were B2G1 a few weeks ago which averaged out to 1.79 each. Many stores like Walmart have the Capri suns for 1.97. It just gets to the root of the Food World/Bruno's problem which is their competitors are out pricing them.

The new owners are just repeating the mistakes of the old. If this does not change the rest of the stores will be gone within a couple of years.

Ok, off soapbox..... I just get real irritated because the employees have always been so nice whenever I go in.

I sat and called every Piggly Wiggly in the phone book one day and everyone of them had a different coupon value they doubled it seemed, or they did not double at all. I remember one store doubled .99, one .90, one .75 I think and then I think one did .60. I don't really remember for sure now and would have to call all of them again to be certain what values they doubled. I think they are individually owned which is why they are not consistent on coupons.

Most Piggly Wiggly stores are locally owned and operated, allowing the individual owners and managers to set their own prices. Their are some exceptions, such as Piggly Wiggly Carolina, which operates a chain of Piggly Wiggly stores in the Carolinas and Georgia. Southern Family Markets, the new owner of Bruno's and FW, also runs about 30 PW stores. It is interesting that the trademark name "Piggly Wiggly" is owned by C&S Wholesale Grocers, the parent company of Southern Family Markets.

It is also interesting to see everyone's opinions of the "new" Food World. From reading the comments, it appears to be just the same garbage that Bruno's has been up to for years. They just have a different company doing it now. It is only a matter of time before what is left of the company folds. Their only hope is to be bought by someone who really will make some real changes.
