View Full Version : Official Walgreen's Coupon FAQ

As promised, here is the Coupon FAQ that is on the store server that any manager can access at any time. I must ask one thing. If people decide to use this information, please try and use it as a tool to help both you and the employee understand the situation better-- not as a bludgeon. I've seen a lot of "ohhh if only I had a written policy I'd...." and I have a bad feeling people may be a little unpleasant when using any newly gained knowledge. If these policies are not being followed consistently, it is more likely from ignorance than malice. Also keep in mind, this is copied verbatim and has some outdated IVC information. Any emphasis on words is how it is written.

Coupon FAQ's

Use the information below to ensure that your store is following the appropriate policy when accepting both Walgreens and manufacturer coupons.

Can a customer use both a Manufacturer's coupon and a Walgreens coupon for the same item in a purchase?

One Walgreen and one manufacturer coupon can be used for the same item, unless either coupon prohibits such use.
Walgreens Roto Ad Coupons, Instant Value Coupons (IVC), and a manufacturer's coupon can be used towards the purchase of any one item. "One coupon per purchase" means one coupon must be tendered for each PIECE sold.

What happens if the Manufacturer coupon's value is more than the retail value?

Walgreens does not provide cash back if a coupon is presented for more than the purchase value of the item (e.g., the customer is using the coupon to purchase a clearance item)

If the retail of the item is less than the face value of the coupon:

-the coupon value shall be the retail value if the state requires taxes to be paid on that item
-the coupon value shall be the retail value if the state does not require taxes to be paid on the item

Can a customer use a coupon after a sale has been made?

All valid coupons must be presented to the cashier at the time of sale only!

If there is no quantity limit on a Walgreens coupon can a manager impose his/her own limit?

Yes, managers have the right to limit the quantities of all advertised items.

Does Walgreens price match or accept coupons from other retailers?

Walgreens does not price match with other retailers.
Walgreens does not accept coupons from other retailers or coupons for products not carried in our stores.
Walgreens does not accept expired coupons

A customer purchased an item using a manufacturer's coupon and wants to return it. At what price do we return the item?

If an item purchased with a manufacturer's coupon is returned, the customer will get the retail price of the item. If the customer purchased an item with a Walgreens coupon, the customer receives the price paid.

Store are not required to keep Roto ad coupons. What about Instant Value Coupons?

For IVCs, stores receive credit from the manufacturer ONLY if the coupon is scanned. Once an IVC has been scanned and the transaction is finished, you can discard the coupon.

That is all there is. Not very illuminating except for the part about the adjustment of coupon value.
A few more things to keep in mind. An FAQ page is usually provided as a supplement to some other information. Sadly, this is ALL we have. I did a significant amount of digging and I could find no other printed policies regarding coupons. So, just because this information exists does not mean it is readily available-- which explains why it is not always practiced. Finally, a Walgreens policy can be changed at store level in certain instances. The reason I bring this up is I had a case where someone, on a consistent basis, purchased several items with a coupon and returned them a short time later for full price. Now, technically that person gets the full value back, but it did not take long before I figured out what was happening. She eventually became unwelcome in any of our area stores. This does not really need to be said, but please use anything you learn in a legitimate, above-board manner. Thanks! Hope this helps.

-Mike

using 2 mfg on a b1g1 is a YMMV, there is no official policy on it. Some stores will allow it, others won't.

Am I the only one who thinks this is not crystal clear? I am not sure this completely explains what to do if the coupon value exceeds the price of the item.
I think some managers might misinterpret. They may say that the policy does not tell them to actually adjust the value of the coupon, it just says the coupon shall be the retail value.
They might just say that if the coupon is not retail value or less, they can't take it.
Kind of convoluted, but that is the kind of thinking I run across sometimes. :shrug7:

Yeah, I agree with you. When I read this after it was posted my first thought was does this mean to adjust the coupon value? I guess the kicker that means they adjust is the first part that says "If the retail of the item is less than the face value of the coupon:". Seems like using the words 'adjusted to' inserted between 'be' and 'the' in the second part would have helped tremendously. My next question would be the tax part. Are they saying to adjust the coupon to the value of the item including tax? Otherwise it doesn't make sense, why have separate statements.

Question about a transaction today. I intended to make a purchase for the spend $15 get $5 RR for the Irish spring/Soft Soap. I had 2 Irish Spring ($7), 2 Soft Soap ($4) and 2 Colgate. the colgate is my problem. Sale price was $3 each, so my total would have been $17. Colgate was priced at $1.99 at my store, leaving my total at $14.98. I didn't notice till after I got home since it was my last transaction and I am new to all this.

I used the $2/1 and $1/1 coupons for 5 of the 6 items.
Anyway, is the only way to rectify this to bring the items back, return them then rebuy with an additional tube of toothpaste to put me over? Does Walgreens have a way to do that without the items since I intend to rebuy?
Thanks

You would need to bring the items back to do a return/rebuy. It would save you a return trip, anyway, so just take the items with you.

Do IVCs count as one coupon?

No. You're allowed one manuf Q and one IVC per item purchased.

i visited a WAGS yesterday that told me the manager started a limit of 3 coupons per transaction. i've contacted corp. thru the website but i wanted to ask if anyone else has run into this problem. it really messed up our shopping trip yesterday trying to get the theraflu's before they went off sale.

It depends how it is programmed.
Some b1g1 sale items scan as : 1st item : 1/2 the regular price, 2nd item 1/2 the regular price.
Others scan : first item at full regular price and the second scanns at 0.00
Weirder still...
Buy1G2 Free sales (there is something in this weeks ad that scans this way, as do most of the school supply deals that were b1g2free)
First item scans at regular price
Second item scans at regular price
3rd item scans at: minus the second item's price...
making it easy for inventory control but confusing to read the receipt.

I would say overall though the answer would be yes.

We had a situation w/ an employee last week purchasing a b1g1 deal...
and there was a store coupon in one of the booklets available this month for xx off
well we scanned one item...regular price, 2nd item went in at zero and then when they scanned the store coupon (from booklet) it automatically adjusted to deduct 2 X that coupon amount so she actually went negative...she didnt' try to go negative, did she do anything wrong? nope. She didn't even use a manufacturer coupon...only her discount, bought a b1g1 item and used the available store coupon.
So I would say if the store coupons automatically do that then why would it not be okay to use an another manufacturer coupon too?
but for me, being an employee...there is no way I would. I think they solved the problem by voiding her order and adjusting the price to the amount it would be minus the store coupon ONCE...and just wrote on the void what they did and why. CYA baby!
Loss prevention is not a happy group of campers to deal with even when you've done absolutely nothing wrong from what I hear.

Do you mean any coupons? or 3 identical like item coupons?

and how can he think that's a good idea? I know my krogers limits 3 per like coupons to be doubled...but they don't say you can't have more than 3 coupons per transaction overall!

That's crazy...I would most definitely call the district manager on that one.

If a Walgreens ad coupon is let's say 2/$7 Limit 4. Can I buy 3 @$3.50 each or do I have to buy in sets of 2? I hope I made myself clear.
