Ok, this has nothing to do with current day couponing. But I grew up in Pleasant Hills, PA (currently live in VA).

As a young girl, like over 40 years ago, my mother would send me to the Foodland on Old Clairton Rd with with an envelope with coupons in it. She would write outside what the item was, how much it cost & then place a "C" with a circle around it. There were also items on the list with no "C" which meant no coupons. I had to go up down the aisles, locating the proper items & remember to hand over the coupons when I checked out. Also in the envelope was the $$ to pay for the grocery run. I would walk (about 3/4 mile one way) to Foodland, shop & walk home, groceries in tow. Once home, I would "report in" accounting for the funds spent & also the "rainchecks" I obtained if they were out of the items she wanted! And I was about 8-9 years old!!

So, I gues you could say my Mom taught me to coupon. Thanx Mom! Hope she is smiling at me now!!

Just for fun, I checked the Foodland website...the Old Clairton Rd. location is long gone, but my mom's teachings have lingered on.

Don't let the opportunity to teach your children to be good stewards of they money pass you by......

What a great story and memory for you.

I remember my mom doing the same with me @ that age (different grocery stores as I grew up in the Philadelphia area LOL), except I had to take my younger sister with me (to help carry). That's all she wanted to do was carry the stuff.

Forty some years later, I do all her grocery shopping for her and use coupons like a fiend. She doesn't carry them any more but, she pays for them LMAO.

Funny how things come full circle...but then some things don't change, the good stuff remains.....our mothers were wise before their time & definitely raised smart, self-reliant women....(well, your sister has you doing the shopping, I wish I had a personal shopper!)

Here's to all the Great Moms!
