Sometimes when I do self-checkout, the machine asks me if I have any coupons, I select "yes" and it asks me to scan them.
Other times I select "yes and it asks me to hand them over to the cashier.
Is there any rhyme or reason why this is? Any certain days or times they have it set up like this?

I have such bad luck with self scanners, I don't think I'd evn try to do coupons at one!

Every time I use self-checkout I have to hand them over. I have never been prompted to scan it myself.

The one store within driving distance with U-scanners, the cashiers always input the coupons. But, the two Gerbes stores in Columbia, MO permit you to scan your own coupons.

I have to hand them over at Fred Meyer. They're owned by Kroger.

All the Kroger stores in my area changed the UScan over a year ago where they will not let you scan them yourself. You must give them to the cashier and hope she/he does them correctly.

At our Kroger stores (Ohio), we have to hand them over to the cashier. I have my husband walk them over to them, and I watch the screen to make sure they're right. If I'm at the self-checkout, I only have a few items anyway.

When the cashier is scanning them, we cannot see it being done, we just see a blank screen. Only after they are through scanning the coupons - we will be able to see what was scanned. Unless you know all the values of your coupons and how many was given to be scanned, it's almost impossible to know if it was done correctly until you can get the receipt and get a really good look at it.

I stand over their shoulder and watch them like a hawk. I don't care if they don't like it. If they don't want me babysitting them while they scan my coupons, maybe they should open more than ONE lane at a time, even during 4-7pm, their rush hour!

Cashier does our coupons in our local stores, however I'll go with the coupons and watch and if there is an issue I'm right there to run interference...

I LOL when I read this. You are so right. I am fortunate though because my Kroger lets me scan them myself and put them in the slot. If it is a FREE coupon though of course they have to enter it. I always make sure they do it right though.

A few years back they used to let you scan your own. Then certain times of the day it would tell you to give them to the cashier. Then they changed it to you always had to give them to the cashier.
So I stopped using the self-checkout because like the PP said, you only see a blank screen and can't see if all the coupons scanned or not unless you already did your math ahead of time.
I prefer to use the regular cashiers now because they have the big screens at the register and you can see everything being scanned including all coupons.

I wish they'd let us scan them ourselves! But so far I haven't used the SCO with coupons more than a couple of times. I just pick the one that's back by the cashier's computer so I can watch them scan each coupon. Only once I've had an issue where I don't think all my coupons were scanned, but I already got the items on close-out so it was still a good deal. ;)
If I go to a regular cashier ANYWHERE, I hand over my coupons in groups so that I make sure all are accounted for. For example, I'll hand over all my candle coupons, then all my TP coupons, then all my fabric softener coupons, etc.

I live in Atlanta, GA and I always have to hand them over to the Cashier, I have never been able to scan my own. Also, I cannot see what the cashier is doing until they have input every coupon which if you have several means they don't all make it on to the screen and have had several mistakes happen.

I go to Frys and have always been prompted to hand them over. One time I got home and realized they had not taken off one of my coupons, it was a store coupon for 2.00 off a 10.00 meat purchase. I only realized it since it was the only 2.00 coupon I had, so who knows how many other coupons they missed. Luckily, I called and they found the coupon and gave me the 2.00 plus tax next time I went. If you realize they missed some coupons call since they have them in their drawer and can check. Now I only use SCO if I only have a few items or only a few coupons. (but how often do I only have a few coupons tee hee?)
