After listening to our members tell us what they wished to see the Hotcouponworld coupon database could do we have been hard at work for the past couple of months to bring you the NEW coupon database!

You told us that you wished there was an easy way to make have and wish lists and a way to see who had coupons listed in the coupon database and trade for them. You also told us you wished you could search by categories. Well now all that and more is here!

That's right... now you can easily search the coupon database, add entries to your have and wish lists, create a keep list, find other members that have the coupons you are ISO or want the coupons you have and trade.

Currently you can search the coupon database pretty much the same way as before and we encourage you to go ahead and start searching it and seeing how the search features work.

The new instructions are here now guys - Hot Coupon World Using The Coupon Database (http://www.hotcouponworld.com/forums/view.php?pg=using_coupon_database)
:wavehi:

Please post all new coupon database questions in the following thread in our coupon resources forum located here: http://www.hotcouponworld.com/forums/coupon-resources/165780-questions-about-newly-revised-coupon-database-post-them-here.html (http://www.hotcouponworld.com/forums/coupon-resources/165780-questions-about-newly-revised-coupon-database-post-them-here.html)

It's probably important to note too that you'll be able to manage your trades in the database instead of chasing trades through PMs if you wish.

Like Heidi said, the main functionality of the database hasn't changed but it has gotten better. The new trader features are just a big giant bonus for everyone!

You should be able to keep your current HL - and then as you add things, it will update your current HL if you have one. Then as coupons expire from your HL, you can delete as you go. But I'm pretty sure it works like that.

I am looking forward to the new features. Never had a have or wish list & tried to do it in excel but couldn't get it to people. Anyways, one sidelight I think will be that people will be adding to the data base more. I have never added to it--I figured everyone else found what I did; but when looking this morning I see that I have blinkies not on the data base, so to put it in my have list I will put in the data base. Thank you all a thousand times for this and all you do!!

I was getting discouraged because I couldn't always find what I was looking for. I know the new database is really new, and instructions are coming, but the only option (tab) I have is Search. It's still the same options as before....is it confusing because it's listing the recently added coupons below??? That changes as soon as you fill in the same fields that you did before.

Also how to I report expired coupons - the .55/1 Cinnamon Toast Crunch IP is dead but I don't see a report button.

edit- never mind found it - under "Action" on far left side

The report option is on the left hand side where it says "pick one" the report option is the first option

As for running slow- It was running way slow yesterday, but seems to be doing fine this morning. Still having a hard time finding things like MIR found in inserts.

WOW! Cudos! Very nice to use. One issue though, today is the last day to use many coupons, and they are not showing up on searches unless I put the expiration tab at "any". Would be nice if they would show up as long as they are still valid. But other than that... LOVE IT!

Quick question, how can I create a list based on insert date and type, like all of the smart source coupons for 9-28-08?

queenofthehivemomof5
09-30-2008, 10:51:08 PM
While I have asked members NOT to enter the 9-28 inserts yet till I have uploaded them (which because of all this new stuff I have not had the time to get that done yet)

you can search the database by insert date by entering the insert date in the description field. Example 09-07-08 SS will pull you up all those insert coupons (up to 200 if you are a registered member only 10 if you are not)

PLEASE do not add any more 9-28 inserts though till have time to get the bulk of them in there. - thanks

I feel like an idiot! lol

When I look up a q, it's not telling me WHICH insert it's in. Just the date it got added, and the date it expires. How do I change that?

Insert dates at the end of the description field. It looks like this:

Pillsbury Grand's Biscuits, Any - 08-10-08 GM
or
L'Oreal Vive Pro Shampoo, Conditioner, Or Treatment - 07-13-08 SS

(I put it in bold for you)

Some members have been entering coupons for which they do not know what the insert date is as 00-00-00 Unknown so if you know what insert date that is...please report the coupon and let us know and we will fix it.

Same is true if there are any entries that crossed over from the old database that someone did not put an insert date (the new database requires something)

I figure in the next few weeks there will be alot of reported coupons so I am trying to check on them when I can.

I'm so excited about this! I've not traded much since I have a terrible time keeping up the manual entry for the wishlist and have list, and if I'm going to do something I want it to be perfect (um, if anyone gets FlyLady they'll know what I mean - still trying to fix that!). I'm not the fastest typist either. So this is awesome!

I was wondering if there is any way to go about copy pasting into the database. What I mean is I usually copy the name of something I read in a seperate window and then just paste it into database. The way that it is set up now I can't do that. It is requiring that I actually type something in. Also I have been trying to check peoples have lists in their signatures and it is telling me I do not access to the page, Is this because that person has already converted to the new way of doing things? And if so is there a way to link their new list to the siggy. Cause I am trying to do trades and I like to explore peoples lists to gain optimal trades.

Okay, first let me say that the new database is awesome!

A couple of minor petty thing that might improve it:

I found that by searching by insert it makes it really easy to add the correct coupons to my have list. However, it is a bit of a pain to have to select each coupon, click on the pop up box to enter the number, enter the number using the keyboard, then click on submit. It would be so much quicker if there were boxes next to the coupons and I could just enter the number I have of each and hit submit when I had them all entered. If that is not possible, it would be nice if when the pop up box pops up the curser were automatically put in the quantity field and it allowed you to hit enter to submit instead of always needing to click on submit.

Also, when you enter a new coupon from an insert it requires the insert date to be in MM-DD-YY format but the expiration date has to be in MM/DD/YYYY format. This is a bit confusing.

It would be easier to do that, but when you are just searching the DB, it is unnecessary, IMO. And think about how much time you're saving not having to type the rest of the info. into a HL.

I thought the same thing of the dates. I tried searching with "/" but realized my mistake. Now that I know, it's okay.

I have no problems copy and pasting into the database (when searching) I try to keep my search terms short and to the point and then sometimes I have to hit the space bar on my keyboard for it to start searching. But this could be a browser issue for you...

If there are links in members signatures that are not working it is because they are either old, or other wise outdated. We don't maintain members signature links (we can help with them). So your best bet is to send the member with a broken link in thier signature a PM and tell them that thier link does not work.

Okay, first let me say that the new database is awesome!

A few extra clicks and mouse points is worth it for the less typing IMO.

The reason that expiration dates and insert dates are in different formats is that when posted in the forums it helps deliniate the coupon terms so when you see a coupon posted in a match up it looks like this:

Whatever Coupon - 09-28-08 SS $1.00/1 12/31/08

So there is a reason for it. Once you get used to it it becomes second nature.

Talk about a learning curve though when I do the weekly upload of insert coupons everything is all formatted differently than the way I have been doing it for years....but the extra effort is worth the results.

I really like the new database. Thank you so much for all those who worked/are working so hard on it!

A few questions:

1) Is there a way to alert the member if a message has been posted on their lists? For example, I noticed a message was sent to me a day ago on my have list (asking for a trade) and I would have never known it was there had I not checked LOL! Is it just a matter of checking it?

2) I assume there is no way to put an "about me" section regarding trading (where I shop, whether I can use expireds, etc.). Is this true?

3) Closely related to #3, I also assume there is no way to put generic coupons that I am interested in, e.g., I'll take any product xyz coupons but I know of no specific coupons available. As I understand it (and it is a way limited understanding so far), I can only list specific coupons and not general wishes. Is this true?

TIA,

Holly

Oh, so it is a different format to keep us from getting the insert date confused with the expiration date. That makes a lot of sense. Someone put a LOT of thought into the changes.

I am so excited about this new database. I have just started trading - about 1 week into it and was getting discouraged and bogged down about having to search through so many posts. Was just about to give up, but NOT now. THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH!!!!!!!! I am not only excited about what I can get from here, but I NOW see how I can help others with what I have to give away. I am so excited. Now I can share and not just take.

I absolutely LOVE the new database, and I can't wait to see the new features and changes that are yet to come.

The only frustrating things as it stands:

(1) Adding to the have list is MUCH easier than before - but easier still would be an option to select a set of coupons (oh, say, all of the ones I got in my 9/28 inserts) and use a single 'Add to Havelist' button to add a given number of each coupon with a single click.

(2) The Trading tab is AWESOME and has already pointed me toward some lucrative trade ideas. However, is there really a reason to keep this separate from the Wishlist and Havelist? It is frustrating to scroll down my Trade list and notice a mistake, then have to click over to another tab and scroll down to the same coupon in order to change something.

(3) I'd LOVE to be able to view only those items for which a trade is pending, instead of scrolling up and down my loooong list...

(4) Let me sort my lists. 'Nuff said. :wink7:

(5) I want to be able to type in a username at the top of the Trading tab and see ONLY the match-ups for that user. How useful could that be?!

Anyway. Based on the posts I've been devouring lately, I know there are lots of improvements already being brainstormed. But that doesn't mean I can't have my own 'database wishlist'!

I don't know if this has been mentioned here yet or not. On the trades tab, I think it would be less cluttered if the items that no one else has just didn't show up. Only potential trades. I would also like to be able to sort each column in my trades tab so I can find something specific a little faster.

Overall, I am in LOVE with the new coupon database.

TIA,

Holly

I have these same questions plus I was wondering how long the old HL/WL will be up? Should I only list my new coupons on my new HL?

I wondered if there is a way to know from your coupon database exactly what page a coupon is on in the newspaper inserts. I have been searching on the internet for this hoping there is a way to keep the whole insert until I am ready to go shopping, and then locate it and clip it out when I need it. I have cut them all out before and catagorizing them drives me crazy

IS there a way to make it so that a person's user name is automatically added to the comment, or perhaps another field added for this info.

I'm getting rather irritated at the number of people leaving messages and putting their RL name at the end of the message. Makes it impossible to find their lists to even consider trading with them.

Better yet would be if these messages went straight to my PM box. I hate leaving people hanging for replies because I never see them.

I noticed that several new entries in the database are showing the words "11-09-08 insert" or "11-08-08 insert" instead of the correct format which shows the date of the Sunday newspaper issue and the source (either SS or RP). This is going to make it difficult to find the Q's we are looking for when we need to clip for use or trade. Is someone correcting those entries?

I also saw that a few of the entries start with the number "1" instead of the name of the product. For those of us who like to sort our lists alphabetically, this makes it impossible. While I'm glad we can all make entries to the database, I think we need to stress the correct format.

This is very important indeed and I am not sure how to stress that people take the time to search the coupon database before entering and to enter the coupons in the proper format. Much of our database admin's time is spent verifying and correcting coupons when it would be better served doing other things like bringing you all new awesome features. I spent just about all day verifing new insert coupons and checking for duplicates and fixing errors.

Please please let me stress to members here to
SEARCH the coupon database before entering coupons (When searching please leave off ALL punctuation and charachters. Example: Search for Kellogg not Kellogg's, O Cel O not O-Cel-O, Jell O not Jell-O, S W Beans not S&W Beans, etc)
Start all new entries with a brand name (Not "Any" or "Save" or numbers) If the coupon is not for a brand then start with the product it is good for, like a winetag for cheese, enter "Cheese, Any".
Buy X Get X Free coupons are not FREE coupons choose the BXGY option in the value drop down.
PLEASE MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO FIND THE SOURCE OF THE INSERT before entering it. The source is the insert type. Such as SmartSource is SS, RedPlumb is RP, Proctor & Gamble is PG, General Mills is GM, etc. And enter this information in the following format MM-DD-YY Source (Example: 11-09-08 SS)
If you still do not know what the insert source is do a search and see if the coupon you have matches closely a coupon already in the database by the description and expiration date. Chances are if you have a coupon for "Brand XYZ - 11-09-08 SS $1.00/1 expires 12/31/2008" and there is a coupon already in the database for "Brand XYZ $0.75/1 - 11-09-08 SS expires 12/31/2008 they came from the same insert. So use that insert info when entering your different value.
If you just have a single coupon that is on insert type paper and you are not 100% positive that it is an insert coupon and you don't know the source check to see if that coupon could possibly be from a Magazine or other source. Many unknown insert source coupons are entered in and they turn out to be magazine coupons because the paper is similar.
If after all that and you still don't know the insert source enter the coupon as 00-00-00 Unknown. This allows us a search term to look for so that we can fix these coupons if we find out the actual insert source/date.
Last of all please make sure you enter the correct date in the insert field. Today I had quite a few entered in as 11-08-08, 11-08-09, 11-09-09, etc instead of the correct date of this last Sunday 11-09-08
I really want to say thanks to everyone for entering coupons, really I do appriciate it. The HCW Coupon Database is the biggest one (and the original on the net) and really is 100% member contributed. There have been around a hundren new entries a day most days since the new database has gone into effect. But we need everyones help to keep things consistant! :wavehi:

I apologize I'm sure I did it at least once because I did not have the source in front of me. Please forgive me....
Can I correct it??? I also still do not know the source. Can anyone help??
Thanks and I apologize.

Report the coupon if you make a mistake and let us know what needs to be fixed. I think there were a few reports today by you  And thanks to the other members that reported some incorrectly entered inserts too. That helped big time filling in the missing blanks on some of those coupons!

homescrapper
11-12-2008, 02:19:04 PM
I also want to say thank you for all those who put things in the database...

I did use the database for most of the coupons and noticed the wrong date as well but if you are using what someone else has put in and don't notice that it's wrong as in the wrong date... Then it seems you contribute even more to the problem.

*** In light of all that*** A huge question!

If let's say Quaker Oatmeal is an "SS" is it always going to be an "SS" WHEN referring to the insert source.

This could help some who have a similar coupon but aren't sure of the *insert source* maybe the EXP is changed etc....
IF QUAKER is always an insert source SS. Then it could be assumed when *NOT* knowing the insert source that it would be as the other Quaker coupons.

If it's not always the same insert source than forget all that blah blah I just said. :hysterical:

Note... I do understand that not all Quaker coupons are always insert sources. I'm just referring to the fact that I knew it was an insert source just not which one exactly....

pennywatcher
11-12-2008, 02:23:17 PM
If it's not always the same insert source than forget all that blah blah I just said. :hysterical:

It's not always the same insert company. Frequently, but not always. A recent example is the Nestle Toll House morsels coupon. It was in the Red Plum insert on 09-14-08, but in the Smartsource insert on 11-02-08.

queenofthehivemomof5
11-12-2008, 05:12:00 PM
In the instance of there is the exact coupon already in the database with the same description and expiration date but you are not sure of the insert info I would say that it is safe to assume that that week all the "Quaker" coupons were in the SS.

But as pennywatcher said above the specific brand might be in a SS one week and then the next time it comes out it could be in the RP. But if you are unsure if the coupon was a SS or RP but there are similar entries in the database already for that coupon (with the same expiration date) it is safe to assume the coupon you have came out in that same insert.

I don't think that it has fizzled out, I just think there there are alot of people who aren't using it and so it's kind of the grandfathering deal.

I initiated alot of trades with people and they don't respond??

So, I went over to the trade board and they were saying I wish people would send me a PM ... So I did that. I still had people that didn't respond but I had more response from the PM than I did using the database. I love the database and think it would save alot of POSTING that is done on the other board. BUT ... There are some people who don't like change and I totally understand that....

I think if you want to trade you have to go out and find the people to trade with. I have just started in trading and have made ALL the initiations!!

I love trading with people and there is a whole lot out there to trade BUT you have to go after it. Sorry to say that is the way it goes pretty much!!

Have your DATABASE update then when you want to trade you can send those PM'ers over to your data base. :hysterical: Maybe they will see how convenient it is and want to venture over...

The buttons "source" , "store", "category" etc are not working for me. What am I doing wrong? The title of the button is present, but the button is missing. I can not click them to select their value. For ex, I would like to choose "insert" from source and can not.

Actually, I can not use the database at all! I just tried typing in "ragu" and nothing happened.

Am I doing something wrong or is there a technical glitch or a trick I don't know?

I already tried clearing out my cookies and internet temp files.

I have had a couple of trades, that I initiated, through the new database. I feel like people are just very busy right now with holiday preparations. Hope it picks up after the holidays. Didn't I read somewhere that the personally typed wish and have lists will be eliminated after people get accustomed to using the new database?

One advantage is that the descriptions are far more detailed and consistent that the personally constructed lists.

This has been happening even before the holidays.

Even when people DID initiate or respond in the DB, I never got the notifications. I would like pop up notifications, like the way I have my PMs set.

I am kind of feeling like the new coupon database has fizzled out. I have initiated numerous trades in the new db and no one seems to be responding anymore. No one has initiated any trades with me via the new db either. I still keep getting PMs.

I think you can expect a lull right now due to the holidays. I know myself I deleted my entire have list because it got out of shape durring vacation so I just RAOKed all my trading coupons and will be starting over in the new year. Also while I know that I promised multiple coupon trading feature soon...that has not happened yet due to time restraints with our developer. I am hoping we can get to work on that after the first of the year as well.

Thought I would give the database a try again. I haven't been using it cause it loads extremely slow on my computer. I find it more time-consuming than just reading someone's manual list. I like the concept but it is too slow for me to load. Not sure why. i have DSL so it is not my computer. is anyone else having this issue?

The database loads just fine for me so I know that it works OK. It could be your browser or settings. I do notice that it will load a bit slow at peek use times (if it is running slow for me I take a peek at how many people are using it and if there are gobs it seems to slow down a bit) Sometimes getting out of the database and comming back in helps with the load times)

BTW- FYI- I used to be able to use the new database, and now can not. I am not sure when it happened, but I have been unable to use it for weeks at least.

Please help!

What browser and version are you using? And are you letting the page fully load before trying to search?

I absoloutely love the databse! The idea behind it is awesome, I also think there are numberous places HCW could go with it aswell! I think ya'll cut a fat hog in the bumbum with this one !
However It is seriously slow to load for me, no matter what PC or browswer Im using. Which can be frustrating of course...so I findI generally use pm's to trade and I prefer the old lists in the forums to the Database for the most part...but Rome wasnt built in a day LOL Greatness can take time ! I am a patient person!

Thanks for the awesome site guys !!

My understanding is that with the new database, the ability to create your old type wish list will go away sometime in the near future.
I probably spend more time with the new database than most folks, but I don't know of another way to keep track of what I have. So here are the steps I take:
1. I go through each of my inserts and either select each Q from the database or add them to it. I put all of my Q's in my "Keep" list at first, with the number of each that I have.
2. Once all my weekly Q's have been added to my "Keep" list, I go through it and copy it line by line to an Excel spreadsheet on my computer. On my spreadsheet, I have a place to mark each Q for trading or keeping. Additionally I can sort it alphabetically by product name.
3. After I print my own personal list, I go back into my "keep" list on the database and move the items I wish to offer for trades.
4. I then file the week's printout and all the inserts in a folder for the week.

Does someone else know of an easier way to keep track of each thing?

I only put what I want to trade on the db. If I need something to fill in for a trade I may go to my folder that I take to the store. But otherwise that is sacred, for me to shop with. I do go thru and do the wishlist. When I finalize a trade, I will then (as I fill the envie) go thru the have list and remove the ones I am trading. I love the db, but I like the PM better than sending message on the db because PM will notify that you have a message.

new database is good one, coupons at one place from all popular merchants is excellent.

Keep going on.

Joanne

When you click on the coupon database, it will initially bring up five tabs: "Search", "Have List", "Keep List", "Wish List" and "Trades (Actual and Potential)".

If you are looking for a specific Q, use the Search List by typing in at least part of the name of the product. For example, the word "L'Oreal" will bring up a list of all L'Oreal products and where each Q was found, as well as other details about each Q. However, if you had typed the words "L'Oreal Haircolor" your results would have been much more specific, because only haircolor products from L'Oreal would be shown.

You can only print those coupons that have a link to the website where the Q may be found.

When you bring up an item from the search list, you have several choices as to what to do with it:

1. If you are going through your newspaper inserts, you might choose to add each of the Q's found in your inserts to your "Keep List" to build a list of what Q's you actually have.
2. If you have Q's you wish to offer as trade items, you might bring up a Q and save it to your "Have List".
3. If you find Q's listed that you don't have, but would like to get, you can save them to your "Wish List".
4. Once you build your own personal "Have List" and "Wish List" you can see them all at the "Trades (Actual and Potential)" tab.
5. From the "Trades (Actual and Potential)" tab, you can see who has the Q's you want. You can also look to see what you have that is on their wish list and try to initiate a trade.

The new database is far more specific than the old lists we used to type. There are other things you can do with the new db, but the best way to learn it is to start using it. It gets easier with practice.

Hope this helps you. :smile77:

you actually need to be a member of the trader or trader in training user groups in order to use the trading features of the database...more info here: Join the Coupon Trader Group (http://www.hotcouponworld.com/forums/rules-guidelines-trading/20899-rules-forums-trading-share-wealth-must-read.html)

So you won't have the options for keeping a have/wish/keep list(s) unless you are a trader/TNT

Also we have no plans of ever making it a requirement to use the database for your lists. This is just an option. You can use it or not...up to you.

Progress has been slow on making some much wanted changes to the DB as we lost our developer when he took a new full time job. However we are in the process of hiring a new developer and hope to begin work this summer on version 3.0!
