I am new to the board, but not to military commissaries. We are currently at our 4th duty station, and the first of which does not have a commmissary and I am going crazy!! We were last stationed at Offutt AFB in NE and I considered it to be one of the best commissaries I have ever visited. Their sales/promotions were almost predictable and they always had a coupon bin in the front of the store which almost always saved me 35-40% on my shopping trip!

Back to the point of this thread...I was actually a commissary cashier 10 years ago in the early years of my marriage at Mtn Home AFB ID and they also had a great coupon bin, but out of the probably 10 commissaries I have shopped at and 4 that I have been stationed at, Offutt and Mtn Home were the only two to have coupon bins! Now, as a fellow "thrifty", I am sure you can understand how much it stinks when you go from one commissary that has that option and one that doesn't. The commissary that I currently shop at when I feel like driving 1 1/2 (which isnt often with gas prices), doesnt have a "coupon bin" and although I can find great deals throughout the store if I am lucky enough to drive there on a "GOOD" weekend, I am disappointed to not have the option to find more coupons. Sure, they have handout coupons on the weekends, and some on shelves, but its not the same! I used to spend an hour going through the coupon bin and to save 30-40%, it was well worth it!
What I am trying to get at is this, maybe call your local commissary if it doesn't have a "coupon bin" and request that they get one. At Offutt and Mtn Home, people were so accustomed to having the coupon bins that people (including myself) will cut and drop off the coupons they dont use, and that is what helps "build" the coupon bin! I'm not really sure what makes one commissary have one and not another, but maybe if those of us that dont have one voice our opinions to those commissaries, we may find more commissaries willing to offer that to their customers!! Personally, I dont understand why all commissaries dont have them!

Happy saving!!

Good idea...I might have to mention that. I may not be having military access soon, but I would sure be willing to still sive the coupons that I KNOW I am not going to use. You never know who could use them.

That is a good idea...maybe some don't have the bins because some people get greedy? Our commissary has a bin, but it definitely would never save you 35-40% LOL!! Sounds like another great idea to leave some coupons from your book, pass on the savings.

When in Germany, I asked my commissary about a coupon bin, and they said fine....IF I MAINTAIN IT. People do get sloppy with them and let their kids play in it and it gets messy) That was fine with me. I made a bin with sections for differant categories and a larger bin for folks to drop their donated coupons in. I took the whole bin home about once a week, and picked through what I wanted while weeding out the expireds.. (I didn't know at that time that we could use expireds there) Maybe this would work for some of you who don't have a bin at your commissaries.

We don't have a bin, I think we use to, but since our remodel we just have the inserts. Bins don't look nice at a BRAND NEW STORE!!!! It is all about the up keep you know..... Does anyone at a "new" store have a bin?

Our commissary doesn't have a coupon "bin", but they do have a table set up with stacks of inserts (both the P&G and military only ones), as well as a section that seems to act as a coupon bin. I know I have left some good ones on the table there before so that others could benefit from them.

It's a great idea!

We left Offutt this past June :( I miss it so much! Never had any overage or any other problems with coupons. I loved the coupon bins! We are now 1 hr away from the closest commissary. I can't believe the prices at other grocery stores. Anyway, I hope everyone gets coupon bins.

The commissary that I visit when I visit my parents has a bin. Its great. I wish ours had one. I would love to share coupons and be able to look for coupons I needed. Sara ~ have you ever asked about this?
