I am new to the board, but not to military commissaries. We are currently at our 4th duty station, and the first of which does not have a commmissary and I am going crazy!! We were last stationed at Offutt AFB in NE and I considered it to be one of the best commissaries I have ever visited. Their sales/promotions were almost predictable and they always had a coupon bin in the front of the store which almost always saved me 35-40% on my shopping trip!
Back to the point of this thread...I was actually a commissary cashier 10 years ago in the early years of my marriage at Mtn Home AFB ID and they also had a great coupon bin, but out of the probably 10 commissaries I have shopped at and 4 that I have been stationed at, Offutt and Mtn Home were the only two to have coupon bins! Now, as a fellow "thrifty", I am sure you can understand how much it stinks when you go from one commissary that has that option and one that doesn't. The commissary that I currently shop at when I feel like driving 1 1/2 (which isnt often with gas prices), doesnt have a "coupon bin" and although I can find great deals throughout the store if I am lucky enough to drive there on a "GOOD" weekend, I am disappointed to not have the option to find more coupons. Sure, they have handout coupons on the weekends, and some on shelves, but its not the same! I used to spend an hour going through the coupon bin and to save 30-40%, it was well worth it!
What I am trying to get at is this, maybe call your local commissary if it doesn't have a "coupon bin" and request that they get one. At Offutt and Mtn Home, people were so accustomed to having the coupon bins that people (including myself) will cut and drop off the coupons they dont use, and that is what helps "build" the coupon bin! I'm not really sure what makes one commissary have one and not another, but maybe if those of us that dont have one voice our opinions to those commissaries, we may find more commissaries willing to offer that to their customers!! Personally, I dont understand why all commissaries dont have them!
Happy saving!!
