I used to be. I did it as a hobby when I got my first real job - it was a great stress reliever for me. However, marriage and babies and I haven't looked at a nib in probably 15 years. It would be fun to pick it up again. I bet I could make some money at it - invitations, diplomas, etc...

Gosh, this just shows how weird I am. My first thought when I saw this thread was not English calligraphy! A professor at my college was going to do an informal Japanese Calligraphy class, but his mother passed away and he had to return to Japan to set some affairs in order, so Mashida-sensei couldn't teach it last semester.

But now when I see calligraphy, my first thought is that they mean Japanese Calligraphy. Gosh, I'm weird. :hysterical:

I know calligraphy. Or at least I used to! I took two years of it in high school. Computer programs have really put an end to being able to make any money at it. The computer can do it perfect every time. You can see my imperfections! Truth is, that's why I really love it, no one item is the same. Maybe I'm just weird though?

Is it a special program or are you talking about fonts? The fonts I have seen don't seem like the "real" hand drawn kind unless you know of a font I haven't seen. Would love to know, hope you check back, mars1990.:wavehi:

Oh Lord... I did calligraphy for my friend's wedding invitation cards about two years ago. I really miss it... I was just practicing on it.

It must be a lot of fun!

I don't think a lot of them look "real" either, but a lot a scrapbooking programs have tons of fonts that resemble "Old English." Also, there are software programs that just add tons of fonts to your computer. And, if you have no experience with knowing what free hand calligraphy looks like, those seem to work just fine for most people.
Is this just an interest of yours or are you taking a class? What fonts are you looking to create? I *think* I learned a total of 12. That seems like ages ago though!

I have a favorite plaque that is old and would like to get another one made up just like it. I think I got it at a thrift store ions ago. It sits next to my make-up mirror. It has a flower drawing and next to it says: Great is thy faithfulness. Lamentations 3:23. Not much writing that needs to be done but have no idea how to do calligraphy.
A class would be a great idea. Thanks for that idea. Maybe a crafts store would do them.
Thanks for the responses.:wavehi:
