Do you have an idea, feature, or forum you would like to see possibly implemented here at Hot Coupon World? Please feel free to post your board suggestions here and HCW staff will reveiw and see if it is something we are interested in implementing.
If we use your idea/s we will send you a RAOK of coupons as our way of saying thanks for contributing.
Please remember the following though:
If you know of a feature that you like at another forum please do not post the link to the other forum, instead post a description and if you wish you may PM an administrator the link.
Please do not use this thread for reporting problems with the forum or its software. Technical problems should be sent via either the contact us link or send a PM to Mark.
All suggestions made here are just that, suggestions. Staff will review suggestions and decide if we want that feature and if we can implement it. If we do not accept your suggestion do not take it personally.
If another member makes a suggestion that you like, feel free to say so, so that we know that other members think that would be a cool feature too.
Please remember that we at HCW have real lives outside of the site (jobs, kids, families, ect) and that we work on new stuff when we have some spare time. So it might be a while before some suggestions are actually implemented.Thank you for your help and contributions to Hot Coupon World. We couldn't do this without you!

we could make a sticky in the winter forum for holiday deals 2006. Would that work?

I think it would be awesome to have a DB for the weekly sales in addition to the coupons. That way they would all be in a standard format. Once that is in place, cross reference with the coupons already in the Coupon DB. This would allow the users to search for a specific item on sale throughout all stores. Since that would be a lot of stores, I would also suggest that the user can select which stores they want a search for a specific item, ex: Swiffer dusters. If the store has an EDLP that is stored, those results could come up as well.
Lastly, once all the info from the weekly ad is entered into the DB a new thread would be started and all that information would then be dumped on to that thread with the matching coupons, much like people do today.
Hope that all makes sense!
Keep up the great work! I love this site!! :yourock:

Yes. I totally miss Cairo. It was such a great help. You just click in a word or two and all the stores in your area with the sales description would pop up.

I don't know if this is practical, but it would be really nice to have some sort of credit system for coupon trading.
Frequently I have something someone else wants, but they don't have anything I want or vice versa. If there were some sort of "coupon currency" we could work out a deal where I would send you something for a certain number of points, and later I could use those points to get something from someone else who could use them to get from someone else.
Not only would it help with the "but they don't have anything I want", but it would make trades faster--because a pm back and forth a few times trying to match up wants and haves can take a couple of days if one of the people only checks once a day--and if time is of the essence that can be a day too long.
For example, if one point were worth aprox 10 cents, and assuming a value of 10 cents on the dollar for most coupons, you would trade a $1 coupon for 1 point plus 4 for the stamp=5 points. (10) 50 cent coupons would be 5 points plus 4 for the stamp=9 points. Of course, higher or lower values could be negotiated depending on how hot the coupon is.
It could also make money for the site--have everyone who wants to participate send in $5 for their first 50 points to get everyone started. Buying and selling of points would have to be allowed, but people could buy a whole bunch at a time from someone with lots, rather than sending paypal for 60 cents.

How about some sort of address tag or address book to be used with trading. Instead of wading thru old PMs to find someones addy, we could have a searchable address book (of addresses we input, our addresses would NOT automatically be available to everyone), then we could eliminate almost all old PMs since we generally only keep them for addresses only.
OR, we could each have our own address input in our personal settings and then have a sort of "buddy list" and choose who has our address available to them.
queenofthehivemomof5
11-28-2006, 03:25:31 AM
both of those last two ideas are interesting. I think berlinsmommy's idea is more feasable to do sooner. We would just have to figure out a way to keep addresses private from prying eyes. Lets thinks about that some....

I LOVE that address book idea... Depending on how and if it would work, it'd be great so that if someone moves - they'd only have to update their address once and not have to worry about sending it to all their usual traders and also super for sending surprise raoks to people you haven't traded with before.

I think the address idea is really great also.
It should be possible to have a tech person set up a permissions based database for the addresses. Users could have the option to use an allow/ignore list for address availability almost like a lot of the instant messenger programs have, and have the option to show to everyone/noone.

Wishing Big for:
Ability to use HCW Database to make "Havelists" and "Wishlists"
First thoughts:
We would need to add quantity field (number of coupons),
add to wish list check box
a pending trade check box
possibly a category field (H&B/frozen/etc.)
and ability to sort list (by Alpha - Inserts - Exp Date - Category)

We need a forum called Price Check. That could be subdivided into sub-forums based on locations. Basically people could add the best price in their locale. Ex: Beckysmommy wants to know the best price in Chicago area for Hellmanns mayo and members can reply to her. The best way I think is for all members to check in the forum for best prices and let others know when they come across the best price they have seen. I imagine the easiest way to seperate locations would be however the big shopping stores do it when they place sales in the flyers, example, Southeast, Northeast, Midwest, and Northwest, Southwest. I may have left an area out, but that's the idea of it. That would be the easier and more organized way of price checking. Another way would be to list products in subforums under the forum heading Price Check and you could look for the price you want to pay there. I'd love to use the price check forum rather than searching the board through each stores forum to find the best prices. This way they are all in one place. Does anyone else think this is a good idea? And who would want to moderate it?

There is a website that does grocery flyer comparisons www.mygrocerydeals.com It doesn't have everything you would like, but you can actually type in a product like Juice or a specific brand like Nestle and it will give you a list of who has it on sale in their flyer for that week based on a zip code.

These two ideas might be able to work together if we can get the sales stuff intergrated with the coupon database. I have an idea in my head on how that would work. Just might take some time to get that going.

I just posted this on the Feedback sticky, but then I thought that it might be better to post it here.
Can we get an "RAOK recipient" (or something like that) as a fourth option on the feedback form? I always send feedback when I receive an RAOK, but I choose "trade". This doesn't seem quite right, but I don't know what else to do.
Thanks!

At home I have a list that easily converts the printed sales prices like 3 for $5 into dollar amounts like $1.66. I would like to have that information here at HCW because I think it would help others to read their weekly ads and see the real prices of sale items. Where should we put this information?

I do not think that is an option unless Mark can somehow alter the html code for the itrader rating. I poked around in the back there and do not see how to do that.

I usually leave RAOK feedback as a trade. Most people here I think when checking feedback do not check to see if the feedback left was for a sale, a trade, or RAOK they just want to know that the person sends stuff on time. Feedback is not even required for RAOK's, its just a free point for your feedback if its left for you.

I'd love to see a whole section on the boards sorted by location. Here in Western PA, our Giant Eagle seems to run by very diff rules than the ones in Ohio, and there've been times when I mistakenly assumed something I heard about GE applied to my local one--only to find out it didn't! :(
Plus, we have access to an unbelievable variation in supermarkets! Within 10 miles of me are: Giant Eagle, Foodland, Community Market, Shop N Save, Friedman's... And that doesn't include pharmacies!!
We've got a shopping Mecca here, so I think if there was a section of the board devoted to regions, rather than only store names, it would be easier to find what applied to us.
Thanks for listening!!

At this time we have no plans of adding state or region forums due to the cross posting that would need to happen. We like the deals sorted by store. But what we can do (and have done) is subdivide store forums by region. For example we had a request for Albertsons NW and SW regions. All you need to do is ask for a subforum for your store and I would be happy to add it. It is helpfull if someone says they want to mod it too so that it just is not sitting there empty. You dont have to mod it, we just dont want to create a forum and find that there is no activity in it. As long as members post thier deals we are OK with that.

Right now location is optional, but I could make it a requirement if others think it is helpful. I too like to be able to know what state someone is from so I know if thier deals will apply in my area.

I also like the idea of location being posted with the username. If I see something for a sale on someone's wishlist but I see that they live in CA, I'm not likely to even bother contacting them since I know the coupons probably wouldn't arrive in time. Also good to know when sending RAOK and you want to see if they can use a particular winetag or rebate. Just my 2 cents.

I think the state display is a good idea also. It was however a surprise to click on HCW and immediately be required to update my profile and not be able to see anything else until that was done properly. I evidently didn't do it right and ended up in a DO LOOP until I selected both the state and input the numbers at the bottom of the page.
Looking forward to seeing what state everyone is in. I surely can't remeber all that when it is talked about in various posts.

If you don't want your state to show, can't you just put the state next to yours? The whole point is to be able to figure out if deals are in your area, or if you should check first with your store before doing all the work of gathering coupons, and driving to the store.
Even tho' I live in a major metropolitan area (Minneapolis), I do not get every ad in my sunday paper. To know that someone is posting a deal by CVS and they live in Iowa vs. California is important to me and saves me the step of having to go online and download the ad. If they live in Iowa, the chances that my CVS has the same deal is very likely, and if they live in CA, it's very likely that my CVS will not be sponsoring the same prices/deals. Of course, if my paper just came with every ad that would be great, but even the inserts that come in the paper by the same newspaper company can be different by region here in Minneapolis! The 2 CVS's that are closest to me are 4 and 5 miles away, which is a wasted trip just to get an ad, or head there with coupons and see the deal doesn't exist.
And believe it or not, I really am for keeping your identity private, but I don't really see how your state will affect that. On this website we even discuss the actual locations of the stores we go to, indicating what deal is to be found, or if we cleared a shelf of a certain item or it has peelies.
My name appears "billig", but it has nothing to do with me. There's nothing you could search about billig that would lead you to me, except that it's Swedish for 'cheap'.
Of course all of this is JMHO.

Ok, this has nothing to do with showing the state where you live but, I noticed this morning that if you click on an active users name, you can see which thread they are reading. To me that is private, no one should know what I am doing in the site and be able to see what topic I am reading. Maybe thats just me, but I would say that is invasion of privacy. Does anyone agree?
billig
01-21-2007, 12:55:46 AM
There are so many things about the internet that are not private, you have no idea!
When you send a message, and it goes through several servers on it's way to it's destination, could be a few, could be many. Whether or not these servers keep a log or the data of your message, you'll never know.
Everyone should at all times consider what they do on the internet as part of an open book. Nothing is private.
I'm not saying we don't deserve privacy, I'm just saying it's not.
If you don't have your email on your own private server at home, they are on somebodys server. I can access my yahoo account anywhere in the world. It's not because it reaches into my computer at home to retrieve them, it's because Yahoo has them in their database somewhere.
A friend of mine used to be in charge of the internet workings of a big business. The CEO and his upper management didn't understand that if the company is able to access whether or not the employees are reading their private emails all day, that someone isn't also seeing that the CEO is looking at hardcore porn with animals and mutilations.
I am also a webmaster for an organization, and I can access all the records of who looks at the website. I can see what pages they look at and for how long, etc.
Everything on the internet can be monitored.
When I discovered we could see what other members are looking at, I also thought that was strange; but really it's just the tip of the Iceberg-of-no-privacy.

Not sure if any one is interested in a forum under trading
maybe called "RAOK for a Stamp" or "Give-aways for a Stamp".
My thinking is we all have so many extra coupons that expire and do not get used. Since most people already have a "Have List" you could maybe post what you don't need under this forum.
I am sure more details would need to be discussed - just hate to see good coupons go to waste.

If you are asking for a stamp, it's not a RAOK.
You can post in the Swap forum that one stamp is all that you want in exchange for whatever you have.

It would be nice if the Database were somehow altered to be more booklet friendly.
For example, tonight I entered 17 booklet coupons.
I type very slowly.
It would have been great if, instead of having to reenter the date, type, etc, reload, type it all again, if there was a dropdown or something for listing similar multiples at once.
Does that make sense at all ?? LOL

LOL
hmm not sure how that can be fixed. I know that when I enter the database sort of saves things I have already entered. Like all the dates and comments. So that All I usually have to type out is the discription field and then the first letter or few numbers and the rest sort of comes up for me in a drop down box of things I have entered.
Does THAT make any sence? If you have a long list of coupons and wish to send it to me via email in csv format I can upload it. Otherwise unless Mark has a suggestion on how to make that easier Im not sure...

Why is it we don't have seperate threads for medical deals like $ cost of each prescription listed according to store? What's with prescriptions and optical being in the same thread. I am trying to search for the store that has a 90 day supply for $5 or $10 or whatever the deal is and I can't find it anywhere in the hot medical deals forum:rolleye: ! I'm not looking for prescription coupons either. I just want to know the cheapest store to fill my prescription at. This is because, someone requested that state be required, and when I went to make it so... well it moved to members profiles and out of the "postbit" (that section near your username) and I have asked Mark to see if he can fix it...but have not heard back from him on that. So for now, till we get that fixed you have to look at members profiles to see what state they are in.

It might help to turn on Autocomplete in your web browser. I think that might be why Heidi's getting the little dropdown menus. In Internet Explorer, you set it by going to the Tools menu and selecting Internet Options. Go to the tab labeled Content. Click the Settings button in the AutoComplete section of the window. Make sure the box next to Forms is checked.

I find that the Walgreens forum here is really easy to keep up with because the subject lines start with things like "dead", "current", "preview", etc. So, first, thanks to Stacy and queenofthehivemomof5 for taking the time to update those, and second, I wanted to let the other mods know that that's a useful thing they could imitate if they have the time to do so.

Do you have any plans for working on the search functionality for searching posts? I was trying to search for posts on the Confirm Clearly pregnancy test. When I put in those two words, it only searched on "confirm" and told me "clearly" is too common a word. Putting the phrase in quotes or single quotes didn't help. Is there a way to indicate I want to search on an exact phrase rather than a collection of individual words?

sometimes it takes a few ways to try it and also if you're trying to find a particular thread, if you can think of a word that was in that post that isn't so common that it's in a bunch of other posts, that helps out too!

That's exactly what I ended up doing ("confirm pregnancy" when "confirm clearly" didn't work). Trying to find the right key words is always a challenge with search engines.
I was actually more curious to know if the search engine was one of the things that was on the master list of upgrades. I know the owners have all sorts of great improvements in mind and wondered if that was one of them. I think being able to search for an exact phrase is a useful feature for the search function.
By the way, Confirm Clearly isn't a good test case anymore because the results are listed in reverse chronological order rather than by search term relevance. The threads about the Confirm Clearly test are only top of the list right now because they have the most recent posts with those keywords. Yesterday, the PSA from Ms.Pinecone would have been way down the list since it was last updated in November.

I think there's some information that is on other parts of the site that might be more accessible to the newbies if it were also under the FAQ link. For example, I think it'd be useful to have a Q/A there that explains why newbies can't PM at first. Is it possible to add links to the FAQ page that point to specific threads? That way you're not trying to maintain the info in two separate places. For example, it'd probably be useful to have a Q whose answer points to the "What is a Blinkie?" thread and another that points to the Couponing 101 thread.

coupon+preview

Regarding the state suggestion - maybe you could have an LOCATION box (that way one could enter their city and state if they wanted, or general location - i.e. DFW, Texas) and then a box that says "Do you wish this information to be viewed by others" or something along those lines???
As a newby, I would probably say NO, I don't want it to be viwed by others, but once I got to know the boards better, i would understnd why others would care where i am and go update that info.
I'm brand new, so this may have been tried already??

Hi, I think it would be nice to have a place where I could add a personal note about something.
For example:
which members had a certain rebate form,
what page in good housekeeping they found the Q's,
or I am waiting on the addie for this trade,
or this person did something special for me,
Maybe this could be added in the areas like members list or cp. Maybe a popup when you login asking to view notes or add to notes.
Maybe something like some online auction companies have- where you can put in a note on the watching screen ( these are too high shipping - or these are zipper fly).
LOL this site is so large it may be here and I just haven't found it yet!
Thanks Tina

Is there a way to upload coupon data from a spreadsheet to the HCW database? I'm not asking for Joe User to be able to do it, just the Mods. What I'm thinking is that when I get a booklet of coupons, I enter it into my personal spreadsheet, then I post a thread about it, then I enter all the coupons individually into the HCW database. It would be quicker if I could enter it into my personal spreadsheet (formatted the way the HCW database is), then copy&paste it to a thread, then mail just that chunk of the spreadsheet to a mod to get uploaded.

Are you wanting a forum by state? Or just to be able to find members from your area. To find members from your state you can search the members list by state (do an advanced search on the members list)

I'm pretty sure that if you go into options and check "Use Invisible Mode" that people won't be able to see what topic you are viewing.

Heidi - Thanks!!!!!:yourock:
I actually have 2 suggestions, but they work with each other.
The first, is how about having check boxes within the coupon database?
Say I'm looking for General Mills cereal coupons. After I look them up, there are check boxes next to each of the coupons that come up, now, I can put checks in the box, and click a button that will bring them up on a seperate page. Each search I do will give me the ability to add the checked coupons to a list. In my vision, this will give an easier opportunity to those who do matchups, the ability to have a list of specific coupons, perhaps even printable.
Which brings me to my second one,
How about the ability to cross reference havelists to the coupon database, so we wouldn't have to type in the coupon information? If my first suggestion were in place, we could do a search, for example, for the most recent insert coupons. Now, the ton of coupons that come up in the list, we could check off the coupons we got, have left, or are willing to part with. Now, these checked coupons, by pressing the "list" button, will put them in list form, that we can now transfer to our haveslist (in combination with the previously quoted suggestion by cmmc)
I know, personally, I don't have a haves list, because it is too much trouble to keep up. I just finally competed my non-insert haves list, only because there aren't that many. If I didn't have to do all that typing, it might be easier to complete one, and since someone else has done that typing, I'd love to be able to use their work.
If in our haves list database, we were able to check boxes, "pending" "delete" etc, then we could keep track of trades in the works, and people could see that they are pending, and delete would allow us to rid ourselves of many items at once, spending less time on them.
I hope this makes sense to whoever reads it, I know I can go on...

Do you have a list of newspapers that have coupons? Something flash said made me think you might, but you haven't uploaded it yet. It'd be nice for newbies or people traveling to be able to look up what newspapers are in the area, what the prices are, and if there's a way to get them cheaper (double paper, Dollar Tree, etc). For example:
GA
Atlanta Journal-Constitution (aka AJC)
$2
Many grocery/drug stores sell a double paper (early edition plus regular edition bundled together) for $2.50 after about 10 am on Sunday.
Gwinnett Daily Post - northeast Atlanta
$0.50
Fewer coupons than the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

What if the Coupon Trains:Hop on Board forum had a sub-forum for trains looking for riders, that could then be moved to the "main" forum once they were full? I know many times the title is changed to reflect the train is full. However I find myself a little confused when some trains come to the top because someone has posted and envelope was received/mailed...
I just thought a sub-forum might help 'decongest' it a little.

When doing a search in the coupon database, it would be nice to also search by age of expiration...Cub here takes expireds up to 3 months, but I end up searching through pages of coupons since 2005. When I click on 'expires' and it sorts that pages listing, I still have to go through each page and sort to search.
I do love the database...even tho' I'm complaining! I think it's kinda funny when my old brain says "I knew there was a coupon for that, where could it be?"...then a search in the database shows that there was an insert with that coupon...TWO YEARS AGO! ha ha Is that a sign of alice-heimers when you can remember things from long ago, but not from 2 minutes ago?

Ok here is another PM thing for you. ( I love the search by the way. Thanks so much.)
When you are reading a message there is a little box at the bottom of the message for "delete this message". Is it possable to get a drop down box in there with our folders to "move this message" to one of them. It would be easier to move it while you are reading it instead of going out and remembering all the ones you want to move to a specific folder.

I would LOVE to be able to send a pm to more than 5 people! I find, since I conduct a lot of trains, I have to send numerous pm's, when pm'ing about the train, since you can only send to 5 at a time!
More would be great!
Thanks for listening to my suggestion!

If I'm understanding what you want, you can already do that. When you are reading a thread, if you scroll up to the top of the page, there is a menu bar right above the first post. There is a menu for "Thread Tools". Under that menu is "Subscribe to this thread".

I would love to see a forum for Mystery Shopping. A place to discuss the "good" companies to work for, how to get started, any tips on successfully completing a shop.. Most companies will have you sign a form for confidentiality, so you couldn't share where you went/what you did, but the forum could still be used for general questions.
Would anyone else be interested in a Mystery Shopping forum?

I love the database and find it so helpful to locate the coupons I need in this mess on my desk. I would really like it if the preferences in the Coupon Database were set to INSERT under the Source section. I get tired of always having to go in and find it to click on it. I think that since inserts are the most common source of coupons it should be the default setting. Then the first choice on the list could be ALL and maybe you could even add a Non-Insert choice.
If this doesn't sound good to the powers-that-be, at the very least could the INSERT choice be moved to the top of the list?
Thanks for your consideration.

It would be nice to be able to select forums to ignore when you hit the "new posts" buton so that new posts from those forums don't show up. I would ignore all the stores that I don't have around me and cut the number of threads to look through in half.
I came to this thread to post this exact suggestion. There are certain forums that have no interest to me and with time always at a premium, it would be so nice to have a consolidated list consisting only of new posts that are relevant to me.

Thanks for the suggestion. I think I can only subscribe to the thread if I happen to see it, and I'll only see it if I hit "New Posts" and see every other new thread. I want to be able to subscribe to topics (like CVS) and see every thread in that particular topic. I don't need Bi-Lo, Dollar General, Jokes, etc, as either I don't go to those stores, or those topics don't interest me.
If there is a way to automatically subscribe to every thread in a category, that would be great. I did subscribe to CVS and Target, for instance, but in my User CP, I don't see all the "New Posts" in those forums. I only see the Target and CVS threads that I specifically subscribed to, meaning those I've already read.
Basically, I agree with TheWoman and would like to hit the New Posts button and see all new posts except those categories I specifically chose to ignore.

You can also adjust your monitor's resolution as well. If you're running at the smallest resolution (on my computer 800x600 pixels), they'll take up more room. Moving it up a notch or two should help.
On your desktop, right click and go to properties, settings tab, and then screen resolution.

Hey guys,
We're in the process of making some changes to the site. One of the things we discussed was the notion of how to make the board easier for new people to use. There's so much information and so many stickies that a common complaint I get from new people is that they are overwhelmed. So moving the ads does a couple things for us....
1. It cleans up the look of the forum, and on a 1024 view of the board (which when we did a poll last year was the more common size people were viewing with). It also moves the forums up higher on the screen cause the ads on top compressed them down.
2. It gives us more of our own real estate back which we're going to use for our own promotions, and as a directional for new people to go to a concisely written "how to" instead of getting lost in the stickies.
3. We're trying to streamline the look of our forums. Organic Grocery Deals and our new site (to be announced) look like this.
Lastly, when we started HCW, we never intended that it was going to get this crazy big. Our bandwidth usage for all the things we all like to use (smilies, post icons, pictures, etc) has us up to a server cost that doesn't make sense for Heidi and I to pay for out of pocket anymore for a dedicated server that services all of our content. We have never asked for donations from our members to keep the site up, and as it grew, we knew we only had a few places to put ads. We have really resisted things like putting ads in the content like other sites do because that's even more distracting.
Like Heidi mentioned, there is a no-ads subscription option here for $10 a year.
We do appreciate everyone who has shopped through the links we have, and we continue to appreciate your patience and support as we make changes that will hopefully have broad benefit for everyone.
So, they are there. I am sorry if it inconveniences folks. We did mention in the newsletter the last issue that

Just wanted to add that usually you can help the site generate the money it needs to operate by clicking through the ads. Really, it is a small thing to do to visit the site of the ads or sponsors so that we can all chat, trade and get our deals! Special thanks to Julie and Heidi for a great site!! I'm sure they are adding the banners because it is necessary to get more funds for the site and it seems a little ungrateful to complain to me. Okay, off the soapbox.

I purchased the "no ads" sub and I think it was well worth it. $10/year is nothing compared to what I save by having this site.
It's one thing to have an opinion or preference as to where you would like the ads placed but, quite another to say you "mind" the ads. That doesn't sit well with me.
Frankly, you've been offered a solution and if you can't scrape together $10 then you'll just have to deal with it.
This is not aimed at those who simply offered their opinion but, to those who sound as if they are put out by the ads.

Agreed. Extremely annoying. And my screen size is 1024 (any bigger & I have problems because it's so small--& no, changing the font size makes not one whit of difference). The approx 1x3" ad takes up 1-1/2" on the left side of the screen (2" on a higher screen size) & now I have that annoying horizontal bar (move it side to side) in play. I try to avoid that horizontal bar. Ugh to the ads in the margins. I have clicked on the ones at the top. Please, at least put them on the right side of the screen so I don't have to worry about shifting my viewing area to the right whenever I log on. I'm begging!

The ads help keep the site free to us, so I don't mind them, so much. I will say that I am impressed w/ the advertising so far, is that it has actually been things that some members might USE, very site-related. ING Direct, Flat Earth. I think these are a great way to help support this site.

Ok this wont be well received by all LOL but heres a plan!!
Host a free auction on HCW. Use the money you make and pay the $10 to remove ads. win win.
I get it, its different. We get all cozy with how things are and change is stressful.
The reality is what has been said over and over. Ads are here to stay, they have to be to keep this site the rocking free to use place that it is!

I'm glad I'm not going crazy myself, but with Ad-block on Firefox my 1024 screen doesn't have the horizontal bar for scrolling, just the gap at the top. The lopsidedness is nagging the artist in me, I want to squish the page on the right side too. :Poke:
I do have to say clicking the link "to remove advertisements" and being told I was already logged in was a tad frustrating. Could it maybe redirect to this thread or a post in this new how-to about the $10 subscription so people have an immediate answer on how to get rid of them.
Like the idea of an auction too. Another thing for my to-do list.:BigHand:

Again, the top is kind of prime real estate if you will. That orange space we're planning on using to promote in-house things and offer a landing place for new people to the site.
We also do try to keep the ads relevant to what we all use as couponers - deals, printable coupons, survey sites, % off offers, $ off offers, free shipping, kids items, etc.
We not only want to keep HCW free, but we have so many new board features we want to roll out this year - it's beyond Heidi, Mark's and my capability to bring them to you from a tech perspective that we're hiring the work done for us. Now that we do have so many members, we had a long discussion over the holiday that if we're going to do this and keep funding time and resources to it, we might as well do it right and do the things we think would make a huge impact to how we all coupon and shop and speed up the process.
The other thing with getting tech support online and having a contractor work for us.....Mark is headed to Iraq next year for a year(unless the war drastically changes any time soon). It's not likely when we have a time-stamp error or the server goes down that he's going to be able to get us back online from Iraq. So we'd like to have a bit of a cushion when he's gone to be able to have a tech person besides him at our disposal.
So no, it's not about getting $10 from each member. And there's more to it than just selling ads. FW, SD, and many other sites were started by tech people, so they had the skills to do some of these things themselves. We started out like everyone else here - as a couponer. And we've vowed to keep it by couponers, for couponers because we understand the inherent challenges that go with couponing.
But we're a bit at capacity for the things we can tap Mark to do. He can do them, but as he's prepping this year with his guys to leave, he just doesn't have the time for us anymore. And really, I hope people can understand, I hate asking him. He comes home at night from a 10+ hour day and gets immediately tasked with PMs from people on the site with their personal tech issue requests and a huge Honey-do list from me and Heidi, so then he spends the next couple hours after the kids go to sleep doing for the board.
So we made some hard decisions, and I hope you can understand the "why" behind it a little better.

I honestly couldn't care less about the ads. HCW has saved my family close to $10K since it's inception by teaching me to coupon effectively. If HCW had bumper stickers, they'd be on both our cars.

But, I am having problems with the pages loading VERY slowly. It just started this morning, and I was hoping it would clear up during the day. It isn't happening on any other site...Craigslist, eBay, or various sports/basketball-related sites. Just here. When I go to the site, I get an orange screen with the logo in the top left corner, for about 30 seconds. Then, I get the homepage. Hi!
My suggestion is :
to include next to each couponer name the state or city where the couponer is from. Maybe under the "join date"
It can be user set, so as vague or specific as that user feels comfortable with. This way, we can all see where they are from easily. This would help us to understand their questions or suggestions and help us help others easily. How many times you read on the boards: "where are you located?"
Thanks!

Thanks!
Right now location can be found by looking in a users profile. It is a required field in profiles. Although people can choose whatever state they want, we don't verify that information. Just don't choose Aspam:whistle:
We want to get that to show under the username but it is on our to-do list.
I think that would be cool. It would be tedious to have to post deals in two spots though..but it would be helpful.
At this time we have no plans on making state forums for deals or trading. Right now HCW already has over 200 forums which is confusing enough LOL

Please, please, please change the sponsored link placement. Putting it on the left side of the screen makes me constantly have to scroll sideways to read when I minimize the window. On the top or on the right would be so much better.
I second this. I only have a 15" screen and am constantly having to mess with my window size on this site. Thanks!

I'd love to see this too!

I would like to see a coupon site where you would enter the particular coupon you are looking for, and it would send you the right place where you would just hit a button, and the coupon would be ready to print out. I see a lot of postings of individuals successes and failures, but it would be nice to see on those postings links to successful hunting to coupons. Am I asking too much of a site? I'm new to this, so I would appreciate as much help as I can get.

Is that your new income strategy?...annoy people enough so they pay to make it go back to the way it used to be. I don't object to the ad, just the new placement that alters the layout of the page.
queenofthehivemomof5
02-25-2008, 09:42:57 PM
No that is not our new income strategy and in fact I am annoyed at the attitude presented in your post.
Basicially what it comes down to is that the ads, like it or not, are here to stay and stay they will right where they are. We have already said that in various places over the board.
This site is free to all but supported by ads. If you do not wish to view the ads we present you with the options to support the site with funds to remove the ads. We feel that the fee of $10 for a year is reasonable and fair to present our members with this site. We do not force you to pay the fee, we do not force you to even be here. Many sites do not even give you the option to remove the ads.
We are sorry that the ads effect a small number of our members who have small screen sizes or are on dial up. But we can not make site changes and decisions based on the minority. Sorry.

I love the DB idea for subjects. Just yesterday I was thinking that I needed a deal on popcorn and instead of wading through several sites it would be nice to just type popcorn and see what stores pop up for good deals.

I would like to see an ignore thread feature. That way for those of us that have read stickies or anouncements we could ignore them and not have to scroll down so much to see new posts.
The second thing I would like to see is personalized stickies. I saw this on another site and it was awesome. We could keep all the posts that are important to us at the top and get rid of them as needed.

I've been wanting the same thing, but just didn't know how to phrase it. I have no need to read posts for stores that are not in my area, especially chains, and it would be nice if those didn't pop up in the new posts. You can call me lazy, but I call it being efficient. If I haven't been at the site for a few days, the new posts comes up as 29 pages. It takes a lot of time to scroll through and pick up only the few that pertain to me.
If I could just go through all the various forums and mark them as Want to read or Don't want to read, once and for all...that would be great and such a time saver.
Thanks.

I have a quick suggestion! Maybe we can already do this, but I can't figure it out...in our PM boxes, I think it would help us traders (well at least us airheaded traders!) if we could make different folders. Ones like: sent trade, in progress, train trades, etc. In my email acct, I am able to make different folders to put emails into so they are not just sitting in my inbox.
Would that be possible???
Thanks for all the hard work you guys do!!!

I would love to see a thread devoted strictly to overages.
Maybe have one thread each week, where everyone can post where they are finding overages for any store, rather than having to look in each store's separate threads? Just seems like it would make things a bit easier to help with planning, etc:biggrin:
If there is already a thread of this nature, point me in the rt direction please:-)

I would love a thread where people could post if they had a charitable or personal one time need. On one RAOK the OP asked for everyone to send why they needed coupons and the stories were so sad. I wish we could go to the thread if we had extra coupon potlucks that we would like to share without posting a RAOK. I would like to send a couple of RAOKs each week if I didn't have to post and choose the deserving person.

I would like to see a centralized place for wish and have lists. I have a ton of coupons and slowly but surely trying to find all members' wish & have lists is quite a task. What I've been doing is writing their screename and copying their list into a different program.
This way I can track what I have and possibly want to trade better.

There's a couple of different color options available. If you scroll down to the bottom of the screen, the drop down menu with the choices is on the left hand side. The orange is the default but I know that a lot of our members prefer some of the other options.

We do have a change planned down the road for the wish lists and haves lists, but they are all in the same sub-form. Wishlists can be found here (http://www.hotcouponworld.com/forums/wish-lists-seeking-coupons-actuals-trade/) and haveslists can be found here. (http://www.hotcouponworld.com/forums/haves-lists-have-coupons-actuals-trade/) You can use the search feature within the forum to help narrow down the item that you are trying to find a match for. And there's a directory thread in each, listing all the lists alphabetically.

When it comes to trades I would love a list of traders in my state.
Some times when trading the Q's they just get here to late!
If we had a list by state of traders then when I need them within 1 or 2 days I could just go to that list. I think this would be WONDERFUL!!!!!!
Maybe the alphabetized list of traders could have a sort by state function or just a separate list by state.

ok. I did a simple search, because I didn't have the time to read thru all these posts. Forgive me if this is a repeat; I didn't see anything in the results for this.
Anyhow, in the Support Our Site section, I would love to have a "Order Your Couponing Supplies here".
You could seek out the best/most popular organizing systems, and sign HCW up for their affiliate program. Therefore, every purchase made; HCW would get a small % of all the sales.
When new people here ask where to get these things, they can just click on one of HCW's affiliate links.

Go to the Members List (http://www.hotcouponworld.com/forums/members/list/), then over on the very right of your screen it will say "Search Members" which will pull down a dropdown box with a search box. Instead of typing in the box, click where it says "Advanced Search (http://www.hotcouponworld.com/forums/memberlist.php?do=search)"
Now just search by Location (choose a state). I choose Wyoming and found a list of 37 members that have listed Wyoming as thier state (some of them are family members LOL)
Also you can check a members profile at anytime for state. State is required (some folks fib) but it may help.

H cats W infant for a family with babies and no cats
H mens items W teen girls items for a single mom
then we could quickly Buddy up and spend a lot less time having to search....:)

I dunno if this would be practical, but I wish there were a way to know (just from reading a post) whether a printable cpn uses bricks or not. I can print non-bricks cpns at the library for free, but I can't install the bricks software on those computers.
So either a subforum for non-bricks cpns or mention of it in the thread titles ("bricks cpn" or "non-bricks cpn").

If I missed it somewhere, my apologies, but it would be great to have a thrift store thread, at least for the major thrift stores out there (Goodwill, America's Thrift Store, etc.) They run daily/weekend deals, although not sure if it is store-store or regional deals. Even if it isn't deal talk, could be just thrift store talk/finds, etc.

It would be nice to have some extra fields in the database that would allow us to link to a PM to the OP if the OP has extra Q's for trade. For instance, there is a Sunny D q in the database that was "Found on an in-store promo table" I would love to have some of these if there are extras.
Of course, for inserts this might be not be necessary, but it could be really helpful for peelies, WT's and tearpads.
I will do a search to see if I can find them in a Have list, but it sure would be easier if I could quickly send a pm from the database.
Thanks

One of the things on our future to-do list is to integrate the havelists/wishlists in with the database somehow, so that you would be able to easily tell who had what when you did a search.
One thing to remember about your suggestion, is that the person who entered a coupon into the database isn't necessarily the person that found the coupon. Often times it's the mods that enter the information that has been posted in their forums. In other words, member X posted a blinkie find in the blinkie forum, but not in the database and then I entered the info into the database. In that case, I would not be very happy to be getting pm's from people wondering if I had any extras to trade, since it's not even a coupon I had in the first place.

Oh now that's a good idea. If we can't have it, then I think I'll start using Google calendar for that. Probably could put the links in the reminder.
Now your cooking!!!! Reps for that idea.
TY lol :) I must have put my head on straight this morning

I would like either all the members to punctuate correctly or the database realize the difference.
Example:
Uncle Ben's
Uncle Bens
Each will give you different coupons.

Honestly, I'd love to see that too, but with the number of members we have entering coupons there is no easy way to have everyone enter everything the same exact way. In that Uncle Ben scenario, the best thing is to just search for Uncle Ben and then the s or 's doesn't come into play.

But if someone added it as Uncle Bens or Ben's and I search for Uncle Ben nothing will show up will it?

I would like to suggest the addition of subforums to the Auction Forum. Over the past month I've noticed a lot more auctions than there used to be. This may be because the site is growing at a pretty rapid pace. Since there are so many auctions, it can be hard to sift through them all. I think we should have a few sub-forums to help divide them up. Some ideas I had were "Actuals," "Non-Food Coupons," "Winetags" and "Food."
Just my two cents.

I would love to see the time in each zone somewhere in the auction forum. So many times I have to post to see what my exact time is.
Then I have to calculate pacific or eastern.
Yeah should be simple to calculate it, but I am a screw up.
or maybe in the user cp with another members suggestion below.
I have a suggestion :) Because actually I just had to double check if we had this or not.
I would love to see a calendar in the user cp somewhere - not one others could see. It would be great to be able to put reminders for ourselves especially for things like trades and coupon trains. I particularly wanted it to remind myself when to email manufacturers for coupons

I'm posting again b/c for the first time that I've noticed, the auction forum is now two pages long!!

Online price books. In my area, a store recently quit doubling coupons. I saw a post somewhere on the net, that other stores in this nationwide chain did not offer double coupons nationwide, but their fliers and everyday prices were markedly different.
If we could post anonymously where we shop, location, what we buy, and any Q's, rebates or instore discounts that apply, it might be very useful.
P.S. The same poster said that our store that quit doubling, is advertising "lowered everyday prices" and she is SURE the reported former prices are inflated. I wonder if that is in violation of any ordinance or law?

I'm not sure if this is where to post my suggestion, but I wanted to request the addition of a smiley, if possible.
I noticed the many awareness ribbon smileys, but you are missing the cause I support the most.
Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness.
The ribbon is a standard awareness ribbon, half pink and half blue. Just a simple edit of the pink breast cancer ribbon would do the trick.
If possible, could you consider adding this ribbon before October? October is National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness month and our biggest campaign for public awareness.
Thank you!

I would like to make a few more suggestions:
1. I already stated this, but I still feel it is greatly needed; especially with the new-redesign. Overall, I think the new redesign is a huge improvement. However, the forums now seem a little crowded. This really isn't a problem in most of the forums because usually only the top 10 posts (if that) are "new" since I last visited. So, these are the only ones I need see/focus on. However, this isn't the case with the Auctions forums. There are SOOO many auctions lately and I feel that they need divided up someone. I think subforums would be a great way to do it. By dividing them up into categories, I think it would make the auctions forum less overwhelming.
2. Since there is now a newsletter section, I think having an archive of the newsletters would be neat. This way people can see past newsletters.
3. I'd also like to suggest a newsletter redesign. This may be picky, but I use Gmail (and I know along with Yahoo & Hotmail, it is one of the most popular) and the current newsletter is too wide to view in my screen. I have to open it in a new window to see the whole thing. I think the new skin/redesign is much more up to date with the internet today. However, the newsletter isn't. I think making it match the new design of the site would make it look more professional looking.
Plus, branding is a big thing. I read a post by hotcouponmoma where she said that the orange is part of HCW's brand. Well, I think cleaning up the newsletter and some of the smilies will help the brand come together a little more. My two cents (how much am I up to now??)

The newsletter does have an archive - it's just not current yet. If you open the newsletter tab at the bottom - there is an archive link. We use an outside newsletter subscriber service for that - so we don't control how it lands in your email unfortunately. However, we think with the new software there is a new newsletter thing in there and we might test that out.

I missed the Newsletter link b/c it looked like an advertisement to me. Sorry! Whenever an image looks like an ad, I don't even bother looking at it. (Is that bad?)

LOL - no, it's what comes from Constant contact though - we might be able to pull the URL and make it a link, so that's really good feedback.
Now that we have a new look, we are going to go in to constant contact and create new ones that will more match the site.
Want a job as the newletter mod????:hysterical:
