I appreciate all the comments because when this incident happened, it bothered me, but I also felt that maybe I was making a mountain out of a molehill. The cashier yelling at me made me feel like I had done something wrong.
I don't think the money belonged to the store because the cashier would not have processed the order without payment in full. I think the money was dropped by a customer. Yes, the cashiers do throw your change at you and immediately ringing up the next customer, so you have to move quickly to get out of everybody's way.
I emailed Aldi's customer service, but they never responded.
I finally got the courage yesterday to tell an assistant manager what happened. He said if a customer drops a $20 bill, then they prefer that you leave it on the floor in case the customer returns. When I told him that it was only a coin, he didn't understand why the cashier made an issue. He apologized and offered me a free bouquet of flowers as compensation.
My son found a $20 on the floor in the grocery store. I didn't know what to do, so I made him leave it with the store manager, who said we could come back and claim it later if no one else did. And sure enough, we went back and got it later!
