ACME ~ Question: Overage?

Does anyone knows if Acme gives refunds for coupon overages?
I purchased 12 toothbrushes and with the coupons I had a refund of $6 coming to me.
The gentleman at the customer service desk told me that they can't give me the refund, I just can get the item for free. This was no problem, I really did not come in the store expecting to get any money back.
However, now that it was bought to my attention I would like to try to find out if the refund should have been given to me.

No, you probably will not get $$ back. In the future, find $6 worth of merchandise and use the overage for that.

Wow, that's a very smart idea. I didn't even think of that. I could've purchased a loaf of bread and some milk. LOL.
