I'm curious about the paint. Did you prime? Did you use oil- or water-based?

The overall dimensions are 6 ft tall by 16 feet wide. We wanted to leave the top shelf tall enough for large storage boxes. The plywood is 1/2 inch. DH used a roller to paint the flat surfaces, and it needed two coats of regular latex paint.
