I would say that you want a bagless one first and foremost - it reduces that cost. I love my Dyson, but the are spendy. And I am going to buy a roomba this week as well. But when we've done the inexpensive, last a few years route, here's some ones (or similar models) that we've had before that have worked well. Amazon.com has free shipping on the ones I am posting for you, all of these in the $150 range or less: HOOVER BISSELL
Both of those brands are well reputed, and those should last a few years for you until you are ready to upgrade to something more powerful (read - expensive).
