In order to be an effective couponer you need to organize your coupons in a method that works best for you so that you can quickly find the coupons you need and go grocery shopping and find just what you need! Finding a system that works for you is important and we don’t endorse any one organizing method. Some folks find that they like a coupon binder, while some prefer to organize their insert whole and clip just what they need, while others use a box of some kind. Whatever method you choose, dedicate time each week to maintain your system and stay on top of it!

Extreme Couponing Tip: Shop at multiple stores
Forget store loyalty if you want to become an extreme couponer. Instead, shop where the deals are. If Wal-Mart has dish soap on sale and Kroger has tuna on sale and Walgreens has deodorant on sale this week then plan one shopping trip (or more) where you can hit those three sales and buy just the items that are free or cheap after coupons. This practice is called “cherry picking” and it just means shopping the loss leaders (items the stores put on the deepest discounts to lure you into the store) and items that are free or super cheap after coupon. What about the other items you need that are not going to be free or cheap after coupons like milk, eggs, produce and meat? Shop at whatever store has these items the cheapest that week.

Extreme Couponing Tip: Pre-Order Items at the Grocery Store
You may not know this, but a lot of the extreme couponers on the TLC show “Extreme Couponing” pre-ordered large quantities of grocery items beforehand. I should say that not all stores will do this for you but it pays to ask your local manager if you have a lot of coupons and you want to buy in bulk without clearing the shelves. Let the manager know what you want to order and how much and see if they can accommodate you. The worse thing the manger is going to say is “no”, but if they say yes then big savings are in your future.

Extreme Couponing Tip: Dumpster Dive for More Coupons
Dumpster diving for coupons is one of the ways that some extreme couponers get more coupons. That’s right they dig through dumpsters for discarded papers. However most don’t dive into trash bins but instead dive into recycling bins full of newspapers. Is this legal? Well it depends. Check with your local city, county or state laws to see if it is allowed or if the recycling bin is located on private property ask the property owner before you dive.
Extreme Couponing Tip: Order Coupons From A Clipping Service
How do extreme couponers get so many coupons? Some of them order multiple coupons in batches from a clipping service. The average cost of most coupons is about 10% to 35% of the face value with “free item” coupons costing in the upper range of that price point. While it may seem redundant to pay for coupons, if you end up saving 50% or more on the items you are buying it can be a real deal!
