Extreme Couponing Tip: Forget Brand Loyalty

Different Brands Of Laundry DetergentWhen you become a couponer loyalty to your favorite brands goes out the window because you are now buying the brands that are on sale plus have coupons instead of your favorite brands. So if your favorite brand of laundry detergent is Tide you may find out that there are better deals on other brands like Purex, Gain or Arm & Hammer instead. So instead of paying $10.00 for a bottle of Tide you instead get the other brands for $1.00 a bottle with your coupons and sales. BUT if you must have a particular brand no matter how much it costs then you wait for that brand to go on sale and you get ahold of as many coupons as you can and buy in bulk (stockpile) to get as much as you can at the cheapest price point. For example if you’re allergic to all other brands of detergent and Tide is the only kind that does not cause a rash, then you wait till it is on sale for $5.99 a bottle and get a bunch of $1.00 off 1 coupons and buy multiple bottles at about half the regular price.

How to unclog a blocked drain cheaply

Clogged DrainOK so the bathtub or sink is clogged with hair and soap scum gunk and you need to get it unclogged cheaply but without using harsh chemicals. Here is what you need to do:

  1. Remove the stopper on your sink or tub (these usually screw off)
  2. Dump about 1 cup of baking soda into the drain and make sure you get it all in there.
  3. Pour 1/2 cup of white vinegar into the drain on top of the baking soda and quickly plug up the drain with a wet washcloth to hold in the bubbly science project in your drain.
  4. Wait about 45 minutes to let the stuff do it’s job.
  5. Remove the wet washcloth
  6. Get a big pot of water (the bigger the better) boiling on the stove then carefully dump the boiling water into the sink or tub and this should flush the remaining bits of the clog away.

If this solution does not work, run off to your nearest hardware store and get your self a plumbers snake. They cost right around $10 to $20. Work the snake into your drain to remove the clog.

To prevent clogs in the first place, run a brush through your hair before bathing or showering to remove some of the loose hair that will end up in the drain, remove the stopper from the tub or sink about once a month or more frequent if you bathe dogs or have lots of hair in your drains and pull out any hair that you can reach with your fingers. A crochet hook with a larger sized end and hook can also be handy to use to pull hair out of drains too (I keep one in my cleaning supplies)

Add Oatmeal To Your Ground Beef

Here is a great depression era money saving tip that was passed down to me by my grandmother. To make your ground beef go further add 3/4 of a cup to every pound of hamburger meat when making hamburger patties, meatloaf or meatballs. Not only are you adding bulk to your meat but added fiber too!

Use Regular Gas

Most fancy cars will tell you in the owner’s manual that MUST use premium gas in your car or terrible things will happen to it. However premium gas does not really affect the engine performance. Unless you have a REALLY fancy car you can safely use regular unleaded gas. The savings between regular and premium gas is about 20¢ a gallon and that can add up to a lot of savings over the course of a year. If you have a 18 gallon tank and fill it up every week the savings of 20¢ a gallon ends up being $187.20 a year!
