Spice Up Your Holiday Party
If you are throwing a holiday party this season here are my top 5 tips for adding a little spice and fun to your next get together.
Music – Put together a holiday playlist and create the perfect ambiance for your party. A couple of days before your party sit down at the computer and put together a play list of mellow yet upbeat tunes. The key here is not to create an entire list of just holiday music. No one wants to feel like they are shopping at the mall when they are at your party. So mix it up! Your party playlist should consist of mellow music that is easy to listen too without making you want to fall asleep. Go ahead and put a Christmas tune in every fifth or sixth song to keep the holiday spirit in there. Some of my favorite artists include Jack Johnson, Adele The Beach Boys, James Taylor, and Steve Tyrell. Of course your music tastes may vary. As they should!
Lights – If your party consists mostly of adults go with candles for the warm ambiance they provide but if your party is going to have a lot of little children running around candles can be a fire hazard So take it from me, a mom of 5, go with strings of Christmas lights. Twirl them on the tops of book cases, end tables, around the tops of your kitchen cupboards and even hang a set on your shower curtain rod in the bathroom. The twinkle and sparkle instantly sets the holiday mood!
Drinks – We do more family friendly parties at our home than adult parties and while I am not a teetotaler by any means, I just don’t drink around my kids. So party beverages for our family parties usually consist of soda. I like to go with a couple of different soda choices like Cola, Diet Cola and a Lemon Lime (Push the lemon lime soda on the kids and try and avoid anything artificially colored, it never fails that a kid will spill and cleaning up orange or strawberry soda out of the carpet is not my idea of a good time!). This time of year look for great sales and coupons and buy enough for your holiday party at the best possible prices. I just purchased 2 liters for 50¢ each after coupon! Buy plastic cups and write names on them with a permanent marker. If your parties are more adult in nature, wine punches are the way to go. Mixing wine with fruit juices is a great way to stretch your budget and still provide a tasty holiday drink!
Food – What is a great party without great food? And you don’t have to be a slave in the kitchen all day either. Start your party off with some great appetizers that can be made ahead of time or quick popped in the oven for fast reheating. Items like Jose Ole Taquitos and some salsa or guacamole and you have finger foods ready in just a few minutes that are sure to spice up your holiday party. Other quick appetizer and party snack ideas are seasoned nuts, snack mixes, crackers and cheese, and crudites with yummy dips.
Fun – Don’t forget to be a guest at your own party. Have fun! Nothing makes your guests want to leave a party faster than a host or hostess who never sits down and enjoys her guests. Eat, drink and be merry. Tis the season!
