Shine your shoes in less than 5 minutes

Spray your leather footwear with WD-40 then buff with a soft, clean cloth (like an old used t-shirt). Spraying your heels, boots and sandals with this product protects them from water and keeps them polished.

Owner Julie Parrish Interviewed on KATU Portland OR.

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

PORTLAND, Ore. - Savvy shoppers know they can bring just about any coupon to Albertsons and save tons of money on their grocery bills but all that is about to end.

Starting Wednesday, the grocery store chain will no longer accept competitor coupons, a move that is already beginning to send  coupon clippers into a tailspin.

Julie Parrish, who runs www.hotcouponworld.com out of her home in West Linn, said consumers are writing in and complaining about the move.  Many of them were saving hundreds, even thousands of dollars a year by taking all their coupons to Albertsons.

“I think on average you could easily cut 50 percent of your grocery bill,” she said.

According to a company spokesperson, the big change in strategy is meant to avoid problems like running out of inventory for items that other stores are offering big savings on.  But when we called the regular customer service number, a representative said it’s simply that more people are using coupons these days and they are just losing too much money.

Albertsons said it does still have several ways for customers to save money, like its preferred savings card and gas rewards program.

Taking advantage of rainchecks

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

When a store has a sale and that item is out of stock you are usually entitled to a raincheck which will allow you to purchase the that item when it is re-stocked at the sale price.

This can be a great adantage for coupon shoppers as this will allow you to find, trade, or order from a coupon clipping service additional coupons so that you can stockpile that item.

Savvy coupon shoppers know that the store does not need to be out of stock of all the varieties offered in the sale flyer but instead look for just one flavor or type to be sold out and request a raincheck from the cashier or customer service desk. So for example if Pepsi 2-liters are on sale this week for $0.79 each, but the store is out of stock on just the Wild Cherry flavor you can ask for a raincheck because the store is out of stock. Usually they will write you a raincheck for any flavor, although sometimes they will indicate that you can only purchase the flavor that is out of stock.

Unless there is wording on the store sale flyer that indicates that the sale is limited to stock on hand or other such wording then by law in most states the store must issue a raincheck if they are out of stock or offer the consumer a substitute product. So extend your buying time by looking for out of stock items in the grocery store that are on sale and ask for a raincheck. Some rainchecks never expire while others, depending on the store policy expire within 30 days. This is plenty of time to aquire more coupons and stock up!

Supervalu to provide bonus with gift cards

Friday, March 13th, 2009

It’s not exactly a free lunch, but close.

Supervalu told customers Wednesday that it would give them $20 or $30 of free groceries, provided they buy a $250 or $300 grocery gift card. Its so-called “refund rewards” program starts Sunday.

The program comes amid tough times for traditional grocers such as Supervalu, which have lost market share to Wal-Mart and Costco as consumers trade down during the toughest economy in decades.

“We know that consumers’ budgets are strained like never before, so we’re looking for ways to help our shoppers find value at the grocery store,” said Jeff Noddle, Supervalu chairman and CEO. Even he has been bemoaning the high cost of groceries, trying to pressure national-brand food suppliers — the Krafts, General Mills and Unilevers of the world — to lower prices.

The refund program ends April 15. It’s valid at Supervalu’s retail stores, including Cub Foods, Acme, Albertsons, bigg’s, Farm Fresh, Hornbacher’s, Jewel-Osco and Shaw’s/Star Market.

The program is similar to one Supervalu ran last year, as stimulus checks were distributed, in which the company added $30 free to every $300 gift card purchased with a stimulus check.

Spokeswoman Haley Meyer wouldn’t give details of how many shoppers cashed in on that deal, but said the company was “pleased with the success of the program.”

Can Freezer Cooking Save Money?

Monday, March 9th, 2009

Contributed by: FrankRyan owner of the website CookToSave.com

There are three popular methods of freezer cooking that can save a family money.  There are many benefits to freezer cooking.  Some benefits include preserving perishables and reducing waste, having ready-made meals in your freezer when you are tempted to order out, and maximizing time with the family by cooking less often.  Fully cooked meals can maintain their texture and taste in the freezer for up to three months.  Uncooked, ready to go meals, like marinated meat can be frozen without degradation for up to six months.  Different methods can optimize for busy schedules or tight budgets and any family can find benefits in one of the methods mentioned below.

Once a Month Cooking, also known as, OAMC is a way of making meals ahead of time and freezing them for later use.  There are several ways to adopt this system into your family.  The phrase once a month cooking was made famous by a book entitled Once-A-Month-Cooking by Lagerborg and Wilson.  Their book is worth a buy at Amazon for beginners, the information inside is valuable to anyone looking into getting involved in this type of cooking schedule.   OAMC, in its purest form, involves a family preparing 30 meals within one weekend each month, or mini-sessions where 14 meals are made in one day.  The benefits are having only one weekend of dirty pots to clean and a highly detailed dinner schedule.  For the family that eats take-out regularly or is rushed to find time for dinner, this is an excellent program.

Another method of freezer cooking is for seasoned deal seekers.  “Assembly Line” cooking, as seen on websites like www.cooktosave.com, takes perishable loss leaders from your local grocery store and assembles them into several meals in one day to be enjoyed or prepared for another day.  Assembly Line cooking turns your kitchen into a family assembly line.  Examples are finding over-ripe bananas at the store for less than $0.25 a pound and turning them into 30 chocolate covered frozen banana popsicles,  buying 20 pounds of pork loin at $1.67/lb and making breakfast sausage, burritos, kebobs, steaks, and Weiner schnitzel.    For the family that likes buying large quantities of loss leaders and getting the best price for their meals, this is their perfect match.

The third and easiest method of freezer cooking is called “Feed the Freezer”.  These ideas incorporate making double or triple the amount you usually make for dinner and putting the additional meals away in the freezer for a later date.  When planning to make lasagnas, stuffed shells, chili’s, or other easy to freeze casseroles, make two or three dinners instead of one and freeze the additional dinners.  Try searching any recipe site on the internet, like www.allrecipes.com for the keyword “OAMC”, to find recipes that are freezer friendly.   For the family that wants to make their food dollar stretch a little more than usual and have one of two meals in their freezer this is an easy adoptive plan.

However a family chooses to adopt a make ahead style of cooking, there are savings to be had.   An extra stand-alone freezer in your home can save $1,000 or more per year on a family food budget.
